KING'S WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS PENN COLLEGE 5-1 IN SEASON DEBUTWILKES-BARRE, PA --- The King's College women's soccer team opened up their season on Tuesday night with a 5-1 victory over visiting Penn College at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.
Five different players scored for the Monarchs as they held possession for the majority of the game. King's outshot the Wildcats 28-4 in the game and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Lauren Phillips opened up the scoring in the 20
th minute when she received a pass from
Allison Andrew at the top of the box and hit the upper left corner of the net for the only goal of the first half.
Erin Laird gave King's a 2-0 lead in the 53
rd minutes when she received a pass in the box on left wing from
Andrea Galvin and put the ball past the goalkeeper. Galvin made it 3-0 in the 67
th minute when she intercepted a goal kick and scored on a breakaway from 10 yards out.
Penn College got on the board in the 76
th minute when Christina Weber caught the King's goalkeeper off guard and put a shot into the upper right corner of the net from 40 yards out. The Monarchs responded a couple minutes later when
Mariana Mercado scored from the right wing.
Savannah Tucker closed out the scoring in the 86
th minutes with a shot from 15 yards out off a loose ball in the box.
Lauren Phillips,
Andrea Galvin, and
Mariana Mercado each scored their first career collegiate goals while
Erin Laird and
Savannah Tucker also had a goal for King's.
Allison Andrew and Galvin had an assist each.
Jessica Natale got the win in goal playing the first half and making one save. Hailey Heistand made eight saves in net for the Wildcats.
The Monarchs will be next be in action next Wednesday, September 9
th when they welcome Summit University to McCarthy Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
