KING'S FIELD HOCKEY DROPS 3-1 DECISION AT MANHATTANVILLE

PURCHASE, N.Y. --- The Manhattanville College field hockey team capitalized on three of their five penalty corners to come away with a 3-1 victory over King's College on Saturday at GoValiants.com Field in Purcahse, N.Y.

The Valiants improve to 6-4 overall and even their conference mark at 1-1 with the win. The loss drops the Monarchs to a 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Manhattanville scored their first goal four minutes into the game when Melissa Stys collected a rebound from a shot by Bregje Smits off a penalty corner and deflected the ball inside the near post. A little over a minute later it looked like the Monarchs were going to even the score but Haley Linkroum dove to make a defensive save on a shot from Brianna DiMaggio.

The Valiants took a 2-0 lead in the 26th minute on their second penalty corner of the game when Smits blasted a shot from the top of the circle just inside the right post off an assist from Stys. The Monarchs had a quality look at scoring in the 27th minute but Linkroum made another defensive save to preserve the lead for Manhattanville.

In the second half the Monarchs came out firing receiving four penalty corners and taking four shots while controlling possession in the first 11 minutes of action but were unable to score. The Valiants however capitalized on their first penalty corner of the half in the 50th minute when Smits scored her second goal of the game with a shot to the left post off a corner from Stys to increase the lead to 3-0.

The Monarchs were able to cut the deficit to 3-1 in the 59th minute when Selina Malacari rebounded her own shot off a penalty corner for her sixth goal of the season. King's fought furiously to add more goals but could not get anymore shots pass the Valiant defense.

The Monarchs held a 21-8 shot advantage including 13-2 in the second half and received 17 penalty corners, 10 in the second half, compared to just five for Manhattanville.

Selina Malacari scored the Monarchs lone goal of the game. Paige Tedik made two saves in goal for King's.

Manhattanville was led by Bregje Smits with two goals and Melissa Stys with one goal and two assists. Kaitlin Halloran made 10 saves in goal to collect the win while Haley Linkroum made four defensive saves for the Valiants.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Wednesday when they host nationally-ranked Alvernia University in a non-conference game at McCarthy Stadium at 4:00 p.m. Alvernia is 10-0 this year and was ranked 20th in this week's Penn Monto / NFCHA Coaches Poll.
