KING'S WOMEN'S SOCCER EXTEND WIN STREAK TO FOUR WITH SHUTOUT OF ALFRED
WILKES-BARRE, PA ---
Allison Andrew scored her fourth goal of the season in the 15
th minute to lead the King's College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Alfred University on a cold Wednesday night at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.
The Monarchs improve to 7-8 and extend their winning streak to four games heading into Saturday regular season finale. Alfred falls to 7-9-1 with the loss.
The Saxons had an opportunity to score right at the 10 minute mark when Leigha Allen got around the Monarch keeper on breakaway for a shot at an open net but a King's defender was able to step in front of the shot to keep the game scoreless. The Monarchs were able to score a few minutes later when
Savannah Tucker recovered a turnover from the Saxons in King's offensive side of the field and kicked a short pass to Andrew in the middle of the box. Andrew then kicked a rocket pass the Saxon keeper's right and into the lower left corner of the net.
Amy Barge nearly doubled the lead in the 22
nd minute but her free kick was not able to get by the keeper. The Monarchs kept the pressure on and nearly scored again in the 35
th minute but
Anna Lacalamita's shot on the right wing just went high of the net.
In the second half the Monarchs pushed to increase their lead but were unable to find the back of the net. Their best chances came in the 75
th minute and 82
nd minute when
Mariana Mercado found
Danielle Putnam on crosses but Putnam's first shot went just wide left and her second shot was saved. The Saxons had one final shot at an equalizer at the end of the game off a corner kick but
Ally McMahon was able to knock away a shot from Ally Hendel preserving her first career shutout.
Allison Andrew scored the lone goal for King's while Savannah Tucked recorded an assist.
Mariana Mercado had six shots while
Danielle Putnam had four.
Ally McMahon made four saves in goal the record the win.
The Monarchs outshot the Saxons 16-12 while Alfred had a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks.
King's will return to the pitch on Saturday when they host FDU-Florham in their regular season finale at McCarthy Stadium at 5:00 p.m. The Monarchs and Devils enter the game tied for the fourth and final spot in next week's MAC Freedom Tournament. King's would need a win to earn their fourth consecutive postseason berth. The Devils hold the tiebreaker over the Monarchs in case of a draw in the game.
