KING'S FIELD HOCKEY BEGINS SEASON WITH 2-1 VICTORY OVER MARYWOOD

WILKES-BARRE, PA --- Brianna DiMaggio celebrated her 20th birthday by scoring the game-winning goal in King's College field hockey's 2-1 victory over visiting Marywood University on Thursday night at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.

The Monarchs improves to 1-0 with the win while the Pacers fall to 0-1.

Marywood struck first when Tori Jo Kakusian scored off a penalty corner from Gabbie Bower in the 28th minute. The Monarchs responded with a goal of their own in the 32nd minute when Devan Pepe scored her first collegiate goal. Pepe gathered a rebound off a shot by Nicole Sott and knocked it into the back of the cage to even the score before halftime.

In the second half the Monarchs pushed to get the go ahead goal but just couldn't get the ball past the Marywood keeper. It looked like King's scored with 8:45 left in the game when Sott drilled a shot into the back of the cage but the goal was waved off as the refs ruled she was just outside the circle when the shot was taken.

However a couple minutes later DiMaggio gathered a thru pass from Sarah Zbierski and knocked it past the keeper with just 5:19 left in the game. The Monarchs were able to keep the ball on their offensive side of the field to come away with the victory and extend their winning streak to 15 games against Marywood.

King's controlled possession for the majority of the game and held a 16-3 advantage in shots and 16-4 in penalty corners. Paige Tedik got the victory in goal for the Monarchs only needing to make one save. Kerri Mountz made 10 saves in cage for the Pacers.

King's will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Dallas to play in the Misericordia Tournament. The Monarchs will face Johnson and Wale University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and then square off against #7 ranked Salisbury University on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
