CABRINI HANDS KING'S MEN'S SOCCER A 2-1 OVERTIME DEFEAT

WILKES-BARRE, PA --- AJ Bishop rebounded his own missed penalty kick and buried the ball in the back of the net in the 97th minute to give the Cabrini University men's soccer team a 2-1 overtime victory of host King's College on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.

The Monarchs are now 0-1 on the young season while the Cavaliers are 1-0.

Bishop got the Cavaliers on the board just 99 seconds into the game when he beat a Monarch defender on the right side of the box and then snuck the ball just inside the right post. After the goal King's regrouped and pushed offensively to even the score. They had a quality look on goal in the 10th minute when Brian Fenster found Jonathan Nixon in space off a corner kick but the Cavalier keeper was able to come up with the save. Nixon had an even better chance in the 20th minute when the Monarchs caught the Cavalier keeper out of position on a corner but Nixon's shot towards the open goal was stopped by a Cabrini defender and knocked away.

The Monarchs were able to tie the game up early in the second half in the 57th minute when Chris Galeano received the ball off a failed clear of a King's corner kick at the top of the box and buried it past the keeper. In the 60th minute the Monarchs had another corner that they nearly converted on when Steven Valencia had his shot in the box blocked. In the 73rd minute King's almost scored on another corner kick when Fenster found Matt Giangiulio but his header hit the post and the Cavaliers were able to boot the ball out of danger. Cabrini had a chance to win the game in regulation but Bishop's header off a corner kick went wide left just before the clock expired.

In overtime the Cavs were awarded a penalty kick in the 97th minute when the referee called a tripping foul against the Monarchs in the box. Bishop stepped up to take the kick for Cabrini with Owen Geedey in goal for the Monarchs. Geedey successfully guessed that Bishop was going left and made the initial save but Bishop grabbed his own rebound and knocked the ball into the upper right corner.

Chris Galeano scored King's only goal and Owen Geedey made five saves in goal. Cabrini held a 13-11 shot advantage but the Monarchs had 12 corner kicks to the Cavs five.

King's will have little time to recover from the heartbreaking loss as they return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon when they host Gettysburg College at 2:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium. The Bullets fell to the University of Scranton 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in Scranton.
