KING'S MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO DESALES 3-2 IN OVERTIME

WILKES-BARRE -- Max Cortinna scored the game winning goal just 1:22 into overtime as the visiting DeSales University men's soccer team posted a 3-2 victory over King's College Saturday night at McCarthy Stadium.

With the win DeSales improved to 12-1-3 overall and 4-0-2 in the MAC Freedom Conference. King's slipped to 10-5-1 and 4-2.

DeSales took a 1-0 halftime lead with 2:08 on the clock when Cooper Moyer took a short pass from Alex DiRienzo and placed a shot into the upper right corner of the net.

The lead grew to 2-0 with 36:33 left ij the second half when Justin Habick converted a penalty kick. King's goalie Owen Geedey stopped the initial shot but was called for leaving his mark early and the Bulldogs were awarded a re-kick on the play.

King's cut the lead to 2-1 when August Axtman scored with 27:52 remaining when he drilled in a shot from 30 yards out following a restart.  Axtman then tied the game at 2-2 with 11:32 left by converting a penalty kick.

The game came to a sudden end just 1:22 into the first overtime period when DeSales' Max Cortina picked up a loose ball and dribbled through four King's defenders, scoring on a shot from 12 yards out.

King's held a 9-6 advantage in shots as well as 5-4 lead in shots on goal. The Monarchs also had a 12-1 lead in corner kicks. King's goalie Owen Geedey made one save while DeSales keeper Dan Sulpizo had three stops.

The Monarchs return to the field Wednesday with a 7:00 PM home matchup against Elmira College.
