WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 10, 2018) – King's College collected another MAC Freedom win tonight against Wilkes University. In a four-set clincher the Monarchs now extend their winning streak to six games, 16-5 overall and 3-2 in MAC Freedom, and handed Wilkes their first loss in four games.
Rachel Miller (18) and
Becca Goldberg (14) led the offense in kills,
Wiatt Hoffmann provided 40 assists and
Taylor Mueller (28) and Hoffman (14) lifted an exceptional number of digs to keep the game close ending in sets of 19-25, 25-19, 25-17 and 25-21.
The Monarchs were able to stay even throughout the first set but couldn't keep up to the Colonels after a seven-point lead pushed them ahead. Kills from Miller, Goldberg and
Christie Brown combined to hit 11 kills and a .154 percentage.
Â
King's was ready to tie things up in the second. Miller hit the first five kills in the set followed by errors on Wilkes and a
Rachel Galante execution. A four-point streak at 18-10 would cause Wilkes to call a timeout. Hoffmann stepped in and scored her two kills of the night followed by Brown and Miller, but it was a service error on Wilkes to end the set.
Â
Scoring 15 kills, only three errors and a .293 hitting percentage the Monarchs would play their best set of the match. Wilkes scored the first point of the set but would soon be shut down by Miller and
Danielle Kitchner with back-to-back points. Kitchner would contribute two more points in kills as well as Brown and Goldberg  to get the one up on the Colonels.
Â
The Colonels put up a good fight in the final set with a score of 25-21. Wilkes would sink 12 kills while King's would grab 14. In the opening drive, King's had five unanswered points, three being errors on Wilkes end and a kill from Miller and Galante. The teams went back and forth up until the last three points where a Wilkes' error, Kitchner kill and Mueller service ace would take the match.
The Monarch's will travel to Cambridge, MA to participate in the MIT Quad Tournament Friday October 12 and Saturday October 13. The first day of play King's faces the host Massachusetts Institute of Technology, then gears up for a double-header against Hunter College and then Utica College on Saturday.
