PURCHASE, NY (October 13, 2018) – Senior
Kelsey Gabriele scored all three goals for the King's College field hockey team Saturday, including a game-winner with 1:03 left in double overtime to lift the Monarchs to a 3-2, come-from-behind win over Manhattanville College in action from GoValiants.com Field.
The three goals marked the first hat-trick of the career for Gabriele and was the first hat-trick for King's College since Bri DiMaggio scored four goals in a 5-2 win over Delaware Valley University on October 14, 2016. The win Saturday was also King's first come-from-behind win in 2018, as the Monarchs moved to 8-8 and 3-1 in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play.
Things didn't start out so well for King's, as Manhattanville tallied just 6:09 into the game as Robin Boot finished a scramble in front after a pass from Maisey Kettlewood. The Monarchs went on to take control over the next 15 minutes, taking the next five shots while accumulating two penalty corners over that span.
The Monarchs would deadlock the game at 25:59 of the contest, as
Bailey DeLellis picked up a turnover in the circle and fed Gabriele in front. After receiving the pass, Gabriele made a move around the keeper and fired past a defender looking to make the save to make the score 1-1.
After halftime, King's continued to have the run of play, getting three good chances by Gabriele mid-way through the second half. It would be the hosts though that regained the lead at 63:44, as Arnise King snuck a shot inside the right post to take a 2-1 lead late in the game.
Undeterred, KC continued to pressure and after two penalty corners in the 66
th minute the Monarchs were awarded a penalty stroke at 66:17 after a defender stopped a ball from going in illegally. Gabriele stepped up and left no doubt on the stroke to once again deadlock the game, this time at two goals apiece. The Monarchs nearly won the game in regulation, but a
Maryrose Mauro attempt was saved by a diving Elana Nacinovich for Manhattanville.
In the first overtime period, the Valiants were forced to play down two players due to cards to start the extra sessions but fended off King's thanks to three saves from Nacinovich. King's held Manhattanville without a shot in the opening overtime frame but couldn't strike on any of their six shots in the stanza.
The barrage of Monarch shots continued in the second overtime, resulting in three straight penalty corners with less than three minutes to play. On the third corner, Gabriele switched to inserter, and that look benefited King's. Freshman
Hannah Robbins stopped the feed up top and returned the ball to Gabriele, and her driving blast beat Nacinovich off her left leg pad and into the right corner for the game-winner.
King's outshot its hosts 28-12 including 9-0 in overtime, while chalking up a 15-7 edge in penalty corner lead. Gabriele led all shooters with 10 shots including eight on goal, and
Kelley O'Keefe poste five shots and two on goal. Sophomore
Brianne Maluda made two stops in the win for King's, and Nacinovich posted 12 saves for Manhattanville (5-8, 1-3 MAC Freedom).
The game was big in the MAC Freedom standings, as King's kept pace with the top four in the conference. FDU-Florham won Saturday and leads the conference at 4-0, while King's, Wilkes University and DeSales University are all tied for second place at 3-1.
King's will now take the short trip across Market Street Bridge Wednesday at 4 p.m. to battle rival Wilkes in a huge MAC Freedom contest in Schmidt Stadium.
