King’s Men’s Hockey Falls To Highly-Ranked SUNY Geneseo in Season Opener

PITTSTON, PA (October 26, 2018) – The fifth-ranked Knight of SUNY Geneseo lived up to their preseason rankings as they defeated the King's College men's ice hockey team 10-0 in the season-opening game.

The Knights scored three time in the first, four in the second, and then three times in the third period while outshooting the Monarchs 58-9. Geneseo went on the power-play just 1:21 into the game on a slashing penalty by King's. Link Ferch made two saves in two minutes as KC killed off the early penalty. Andrew Romano gave the Knights a 1-0 lead at the 6:25 mark of the first when he scored off assists by Conlan Keenan and Chris Perna.

Brandon Miller scored four minutes later off an assist by Romano to make it 2-0. Geneseo quickly made it 3-0 under a minute later when Anthony Marra found the back of the net. Perna and Tyson Empey recorded the assists. The Knights finished the period outshooting the Monarchs 22-3 as Ferch made 19 saves in goal during the 20 minutes.

Gordon Helmuth increased the lead to 4-0 2:21 into the second period before Miller collected his second goal of the game at 5:39. Helmuth added his second goal of the period not even a minute later to bring the Knights advantage to six. Arthur Gordon ended the period with a short-handed goal with 23 second remaining. The Monarchs were able to get four shots off in the period and Ferch picked up another 13 saves.

Keenan, Empey, and Dan Bosio all scored in the third period for the Knights. KC struggled all night to gain any momentum against the highly-ranked opponent. Ferch finished the night with 48 saves. Devin McDonald picked up the shutout victory in goal for Geneseo making nine saves.

Geneseo is the highest ranked opponent King's has faced in 26 games. Last season Utica was nationally-ranked both times the Monarchs faced them. The Pioneers were ranked 10th when KC squared off with them at the end of the season.

Miller and Helmuth each had two goals to lead the Knights while Perna and Joe Serpico recorded three assists apiece.

The Monarchs were led by Christian La Croix with three shots and Tyler O'Mara with two. Jamie Lukas, Nicholas Palumbo, JP Natishan, and Tommy Green recorded a shot each.

King's will be back in action tomorrow afternoon hosting The College at Brockport at 3 p.m. back at Revolution Ice.
