Women’s Soccer Comes Up Short Against Stockton

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 3, 2018) – The Stockton University women's soccer team scored three second half goals to defeat King's College 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference contest at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.

The Monarchs (4-5-0) were the aggressors early in the match as the majority of the first 10 minutes were played in King's offensive half of the field. Unfortunately, the Monarchs were unable to get off a shot. Stockton (8-2-3) was able to move the ball down the field in the 17th minute and took the first three shots of the match. Tara Bender made easy work of the first two shots while the third shot sailed wide right.

KC had an excellent chance to score early in the 20th minute when Danielle Putnam crossed a ball from the right side into the box. Casey Genovese collected the cross and sent a shot that just went high of the crossbar. Emma Baumbusch had two great looks at the net in the 32nd minute. Her first attempt on the left wing right outside the box was blocked by a Stockton defender and then her free kick after a foul from about 25 yards away sailed high.

The Ospreys got on the board just 1:32 into the second half when Alexa Simonetti scored off a cross from the right side by Dasey Dielmo. The Monarchs responded by earning the only corner kick of the match in the 53rd minute. Breanna Jacinto took the corner and then picked up a failed clear attempt on the left side. Her shot just missed left of the post.

Stockton increased their lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute on a goal scored by Brenna Clowney. Clowney took advantage of a loose ball just outside the box as Bender came out of goal to stop a charging Osprey attacker and knocked the ball into the back of an empty net. SU looked to increase their lead even further in the 63rd minute when reigning NJAC Offensive Player of the Week Salena Ledonne hit the crossbar and Emily Frazee put the rebound on goal. Bender was able to make the save on Frazee's shot to keep the Osprey advantage at two. Stockton scored their final goal of the match in the 73rd minute on a header by Bri Pagnani off a cross by Simonetti.

The Ospreys out-shot the Monarchs 13-5 in the match. Bender made seven saves in goal for the Monarchs. Nicole Pallante picked up her eighth shutout of the year for Stockton without needing to make a save.

King's will get back into conference action with a huge match on Saturday. The Monarchs will face nationally-ranked Misericordia University at 5 p.m. in Dallas on Mangelsdorf Field. The Cougars were ranked 14th in this week's United Soccer Coaches Poll.
