King's Defeats Centenary 3-0

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 3, 2018) – It was a night dominated by the younger Monarchs as they breeze by Centenary University with a 3-0 win. Now at an overall 13-5 record King's pushes Centenary to 0-9 for the 2018 season. With set scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-16 the Cyclones almost had as many errors (21) as King's had executions (28) and the Monarchs outscored Centenary by more than half. Rachel Galante clinched five kills and three solo blocks against the Cyclones while Olivia Musto and Grace Frati also contributed five kills and Karissa Hartzell four service aces and 14 digs. Wiatt Hoffmann had 21 assists.

Starting off the set on a streak, Galante and Musto tallied back-to-back kills and Hartzell scored one of what would be her four service aces. Centenary did their best to keep up with the Monarchs but were never able to break the lead. Becca Goldberg was able to grab two points for the Monarchs as well as setter Wiatt Hoffmann and Christie Brown who both had a kill and service ace this set. Sarah Hayward proved to be a force hitting a season-high of two service aces and setting up multiple players for success including Brown's set winning point which came after five unanswered points by King's.

Frati scored the first set point with an ace for the squad and Centenary would go point-for-point with the Monarchs until kills by Hoffman, Hayward, Frati and attacking errors would force a Centenary timeout at a 15-12 Monarch lead. An attempted attack by Cyclone's Melissa Kruger would be halted by Galante who was also able to score the next point for the Monarchs. The set ended in three unreturned points, Galante grabbing the final point with her second solo block of the night.

In the final set, King's would notch their highest number of kills of the match and their best hitting percentage. Centenary came in confident grabbing the first two points of the set but would soon be shot down. Six unrequited points were taken by the Monarchs including Hartzell's two final aces that gave her a season-high of four and kills by Cleo Schultz and Galante. Lindsey Brady was able to set the team up for a string of terminations, two by freshman Meg O'Brien. Centenary would attempt a comeback while exchanging points with the team but a kill by O'Brien and ace by Schultz proved to be fatal for the Cyclones.

The Monarchs will return home this weekend October 6 in the McGrane Gymnasium, where they host the King's College Tri-Match featuring the Albright College Lions and Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders. King's will face Albright first at 11:00 a.m. followed by Albright vs. Rutgers-Newark at 1:00 p.m. and finished with King's battling the Scarlet Raiders at 3:00 p.m.
