BRISTOL, R.I. (November 10, 2018) — The King's College wrestling team competed in the Roger Williams Invitational where 11 other teams came from outside the Middle Atlantic Conference to compete. King's finished 12
thout of 12 teams but was able to put up some exceptional victories.
Dakota Quick was also able to make another semi-final appearance for the Monarchs.
Quick started the tournament off with a bang. He won his first match by pin fall with about a minute left in the third period. Quick and Wilson Gomes of Bridgewater State got into some scuffles but the junior Monarch ket control the whole match and advanced to the next round.
In his second match of the day, Quick came back from a 4-7 deficit to defeat Jacob Forsman of Norwich by pin. He would then go on to the semi-finals where he was pinned by Southern Maine's Peter Del Gallo and the consi-semis where he would meet the same fate against a RWU wrestler. After a major decision loss to Wesleyan, he was awarded 6
thplace in the 125-pound weight class.
Going 4-2 at the invitational was
Matt Sparks who won his first match by a 3-2 decision and would lose his next against Luke Bokina of RWU sending him to the consolation bracket. He then earned three straight wins.
Sparks won by fall half way through the second period of his next match and then went on to dominate his opponent earning a 11-6 decision. In his final win of the day, Sparks went 1-1 with Jared Garcia of Southern Maine pushing him into overtime. He got an essential takedown and emerged 3-1 for the victory. His run would end in the consolation quarter finals.
Freshmen
Nick Palazzolo and
Kade Kravits earned a bye for their first appearance in the 157- weight class bracket. Palazzolo put up a good fight in his matches getting a take down and escape but ultimately left the invitational winless.
Kravits won his match in a 5-2 decision after being taken down early in the first period. He recovered with a reversal and was able to ride out the top for the next two periods. Kravits chose bottom for the final period which would give him another reversal and solidified his win. Kravits fought hard but would get stuck in his next two fights getting pinned and eliminated.
Rene Sousa competed for the first time this season and went 1-3 in his bouts. Sousa fought his first match earning two escapes before getting stuck rolling through and eventually dropping in a technical fall to Scott Dupont of NYU.
Earning a bye in the consolation bracket, Sousa would go on to take down Conor Maier of USMMA. In his contest Sousa went 12-0 before taking Maier down and working in a guillotine to finish the match with a pin. His final match would end in a major decision of 13-4 eliminating him from competition.
The team will now travel to Salem, VA where Ferrum College will host the Southeast Region Duals. Saturday, November 17, King's will face Bluefield College followed by Southern Virginia University and then Ferrum College.
