SELINSGROVE, PA (November 16, 2018) -- Host Susquehanna University used a 16-3 run over 4:44 early in the second half to pull away from the King's College men's basketball team in the second game of the Susquehanna Trailways Tip-Off Tournament Friday evening, earning an 85-62 win from O.W. Houts Gymnasium.
The Monarchs (0-3) will now take on Grove City College in the consolation game Saturday at 1 p.m., while the River Hawks will battle Oneonta in the title game at 3 p.m.
The Monarchs and River Hawks played each other tight through the first 10 minutes of the first half, as King's took a three-point lead after an old fashioned three-point play by senior
James Willis at 12:24 of the first half. The two teams would be deadlocked six times over the next 10 minutes, while the lead changed hands four times.
King's regained the lead at 26-23 after
Josh Bailey buried a three-pointer with 3:23 remaining in the first half, but the River Hawks went on a 7-0 run to finish the half to take a 30-26 advantage into halftime. After the intermission, King's couldn't get much going offensively as SU (1-1) took advantage to move into the championship game Saturday.
Sophomore
Noah Tanner led the way offensively for King's with 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting, and sophomore
Brad Kalinowski came off the bench to post 10 points, two assists and two rebounds in 12 minutes. Kalinowski, making his debut in the red and gold, also knocked down all five free throws he took.
Willis finished with eight points and five rebounds, and Bailey added seven points for the Monarchs. King's was led on the boards by sophomore
Pat Mitchell with seven rebounds, and
Patrick Galvin and
Joe Lonardi each posted six points off the bench for King's. KC shot 31.1 percent (19-61) from the floor Friday, but was great at the line going 20-for-24.
Bryce Butler scored a game-high 17 points for Susquehanna, adding six rebounds, and Matt LaCorte chalked up 14 points, six rebounds and made 4-of-5 from behind the arc. SU shot 71.4 percent in the second half, connecting on 20 of their 28 shots in the period. The River Hawks made 47.8 percent from deep on the game (11-23), going 12-of-13 at the stripe.
