WILKES-BARRE, PA (November 26, 2018) – Junior guard
Mackenzie Yori scored a game-high 19 points, adding seven steals as the King's College women's basketball team forced 34 turnovers in a 66-31 win in non-conference action from McGrane Gymnasium in the Scandlon Physical Education Center Monday evening.
Yori was a catalyst on both ends of the floor, as she connected on eight of her 17 field goals on the night, making 3-of-9 from downtown while posting a career-best seven thefts. Senior
Alexis Steeber finished with 17 points on 7-of-13 and three blocks, and
Rebecca Prociak added 13 points while connecting on 9-of-10 from the line.
King's struggled from the floor in the opening half, as both teams couldn't get much going offensively. The first quarter was slow to get going for the Monarchs, as they trailed 6-3 after seven minutes of action after a Danika Brandt layup with 3:08 to play in the opening stanza. Yori answered that layup with a triple to tie it and the junior followed with a fast-break layup just before the end of the quarter to give King's an 8-6 lead.
The Monarchs would pick things up offensively in the second period, shooting 56.3 percent (9-16) while outscoring the Cyclones (0-4) 22-8 in the frame to take a 30-14 lead at halftime after
Zoe Stein made a layup just before intermission. King's would increase its lead up to 23 at the period and grew its lead to 38 with 1:23 to play on a three from Yori to close the book on Centenary.
The Monarchs won the turnover battle 34-13 on Monday, as the 34 turnovers forced for King's was the most in a game since causing 36 against Manhattanville back on February 11, 2011. As expected, the Monarchs dominated the points off turnovers battle, 33-4, while scoring all 31 fast-break points in the game.
Freshman
Samantha Rajza played 25 minutes, posting seven points and three steals, which is the fifth straight game for the newcomer with three thefts. It was the first time that a Monarch has posted three or more steals in five straight games since Kayla Feairheller accomplished the feat back in 2016-17.
Fellow freshman
Emily Kriston posted five points, five steals, four assists and five rebounds on the night, as King's shot 42.9 percent (24-56) from the floor while making 31.8 percent from downtown (7-22).
Centenary was led by the 10 points from Katie Alvarez, as she also led the way for the Cyclones on the boards with eight. CU won the rebounding battle 35-28, but only took 37 shots on the night as compared to the 56 from King's.
The Monarchs (4-2) are back out on the road on Thursday, as King's travels to Wesley College (1-3) in Dover, DE for a non-conference matchup with the Wolverines at 6 p.m. at the Jim and Shirley Wentworth Gymnasium.
