GRANTHAM, PA (December 1, 2018) — Two Monarchs were able to place after the second day at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational.
Matt Sparks and
Dakota Quick both finished their run at the tournament in fourth place among the consolation brackets while the team ended 11 out of 15 teams.
Sparks was up first for King's College battling for a shot in the finals against Messiah's own Stephen Maloney who would go on to win first place in the 149 weight class. Sparks pushed but got caught in a cradle which rolled him into a pin early on, ending the match.
He would start in the consolation quarterfinals and cranked out a 10-8 decision victory against Ryan Dominique of Greensboro. Sparks persevered through multiple takedowns but would end his efforts in the finals after a pin by Mount Union's Luke Hernandez caught him. Sparks finished in fourth place.
Quick started the day in the consolation semifinals after a medical forfeit pushed him through the quarterfinals. In the semis, Quick pinned Nick DeRosa of Springfield with 30 seconds left in the first period. It was a scrambling match before the junior secured a cradle before earning his pin.
The final match was a 8-0 major decision in favor of Mount Union's Seth Hayes. Quick left the invitational with a fourth place medal for the 125 bracket.
The Monarchs take on Messiah College at home on Friday, December 15, in the McGrane Gymnasium at 12:00 p.m. in a MAC Freedom dual. This will be the first conference match-up of the season for King's.
