KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS CORTLAND
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team used old-fashioned grit and resolve to post a hard-fought doubleheader sweep of visiting Cortland State University Tuesday in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
With the win, King's improved to 11-5 on the year while Cortland slipped to 6-8.
In the opener, the teams went into the international tiebreaker after the game was deadlocked 2-2 after seven innings.
Following a scoreless eighth, Cortland pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the frame King's countered when Ally DeVoir as placed at second base and Amber Saylor doubled to cut the score to 4-3. Samantha Bloom then doubled to knot the score at 4-4. After an infield single by Lexi Wolk, Kelcie Senchak reached base on a fielding error to load the bases. Mackenzie Yori then drew a walk to bring home the winning run.
Bloom was the winning pitcher for King's, allowing four runs, three earned, on 12 hits and struck out two batters. Saylor led King's with a 2-for-4 showing with two RBI.
In the nightcap King's trailed 1-0 after four innings.
In the fifth inning Mindina Lieback walked and moved to third on consecutive wild pitches. Ally DeVoir then delivered a sacrifice fly to play Lieback, tying the game at 1-1.
King's added what proved to be he wining run in the sixth when Wolk singled and later scored from second on an error.
Freshman Nicole Kirse was the winning pitcher for the Monarchs, allowing six hits in the game. Beapure was King's multi-hit player, going 2-for-2 .
King's returns to action Thursday with a 2:00 PM home doubleheader against Misericordia.
