Monarch Volleyball Starts 2018 Season With Sweep of PSU-Abington, Cedar Crest

The Monarchs hit .299 for the match, including hammering down 12 kills in the opening set to earn the season-starting sweep. King's was in control the entire match, holding their host Lions to a -.096 hitting percentage, while chalking up a 31-13 kill edge.

In the opening set, King's scored 11 of the match's opening 14 points, capped by a termination from senior Rachel Miller. The Monarchs led by as many as 18 at 24-8, and clinched the set thanks to a kill from freshman Danielle Kitchner off of an assist from sophomore Alyssa Robinson.

The second set saw the Monarchs take an early 3-0 lead, and then pulled away mid-way through the game thanks to a 5-0 run on the strength of a pair of kills from Rachel Galante. KC would continue to hold the momentum, adding an 7-0 spurt late in the set to clinch a 2-0 match lead.

The Lions (0-1) took a 2-1 advantage in the early going, but King's rattled off five straight points to take a 6-2 lead. King's started to pull away during the middle part of the set thanks to some solid defensive play, forcing the Lions into -.172 hitting in the third stanza to earn the win.

Miller led the way for the Monarchs with a match-high eight kills on 15 attempts, hitting a team-best .533. The senior captain added eight digs and two service aces, while sophomore Galante hit .455 on her 11 attempts, finishing with six kills.

The freshman class was on full display, showing their talent and promise, as setter Wiatt Hoffmann finished with 24 assists and four service aces. Fellow newcomer Grace Frati added seven kills, three aces and five digs, and libero Taylor Mueller finished with a match-best 14 digs in her first collegiate contest. Newcomer Sarah Hayward also tallied kills on both of her attempts. King's tallied 31 kills on its 67 swings, erring just 11 times.

In the second match of the day, King's had to rally after falling in the opening set to the Falcons to take the four-setter. The Monarchs, having to play back-to-back contests, were caught off-guard by Cedar Crest which took advantage of nine hitting errors from the Monarchs.

After the first set loss, King's defensive unit began to stifle the Falcons, holding CCC to negative hitting in the second set to roll to a 25-13 win. In the set, freshman Becca Golderg chalked up three kills while Miller added three terminations of her own. King's offensive unit continued to fire on all cylinders in the third and fourth sets, hitting .323 in the third stanza while posting a match-best 15 kills in the fourth to clinch the win.

The Monarchs spread the offensive wealth out in the second victory of the day, as Goldberg tallied a match-best 12 kills and Miller finished with an all-around dominant  match of 11 kills, three assists, three service aces, and 14 digs to post her first double-double of the 2018 season. Frati also filled the stat sheet with eight kills, two aces and 17 digs, while Hoffmann handed out 40 assists in addition to her 10 digs to tally her first career double-double.

Defensively, Mueller was all over the place with 19 digs, and Galante finished with nine kills and two assisted blocks. Kitchner added six terminations on 14 attempts, and freshman Toni Gallaso contributed eight digs as well for the Monarchs.

The Monarchs will have the rest of the weekend off before returning to action Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. in Langhorne, PA to take on Cairn University in more non-conference action.
