WILKES-BARRE, PA (August 31, 2018) – The King's College women's soccer team dominated play for much of the 2018 season opener in McCarthy Stadium, outshooting visiting Penn College 23-7, but a double-overtime tally by the visiting Penn College gave the Wildcats a 2-1 victory Friday evening.
King's (0-1) had plenty of good scoring opportunities in the opening half, including a shot by
Emma Baumbusch that rattled off the cross bar and out in the 12
th minute. Later in the opening stanza, King's College jumped on top as
Sophia Sacknievich pounced on a loose ball after a failed clear on a corner kick, hammered her shot in off Penn College keeper's hands and under the cross bar for the 1-0 lead.
The Monarchs led 1-0 at the half, but Penn College (1-0) scored in the 60
th minute to even the contest at 1-1 as Kaelan Cronan broke through the Monarch defense and slotted her shot into the lower right-hand side of the net.
After that point, the Monarchs controlled the play, taking the next six shots of the game, including great chances in the 79
th minute by
Stephanie Corea and
Natalie Poulton that were saved by Taylor Gonzales of Penn College. Minutes later, the Wildcats had a pair of chances that were denied by
Tara Bender, who came in as a reserve for the Monarchs.
KC would continue to control things through the end of regulation but couldn't get on the board as the game went to overtime. In the extra periods, neither team could get much going in terms of offensive scoring chances until the second overtime stanza. Just 1:13 into the second overtime session, Cronan broke through alone again and scored another unassisted tally to give the Wildcats the win.
The Monarchs posted a huge 14-2 advantage in corner kicks, and also led the shots on goal column 11-6. King's starting goalkeeper
Jess Schenfeld allowed no goals in her 45 minutes of action, while Bender made four stops in her relief appearance.
Baumbusch led the Monarchs in shot attempts with seven, placing three on goal, while Sacknievich and
Emily Harrington each fired three shot attempts each. Gonzales made 10 saves for the Wildcats in the winning effort, while Cronan took five of the team's seven shots in the contest.
King's will have some time to regroup before retaking the pitch to take on Ramapo College Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium in more non-conference action.
