Women’s Soccer Falls To Susquehanna

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 12, 2018) – The King's College women's soccer team fell to visiting Susquehanna University 2-0 on a wet Wednesday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.

The Monarchs (2-2) controlled possession for much of the match but it was the River Hawks (3-1-1) who were able to take advantage of two opportunities to come away with the victory. Both teams struggled to find openings for shots throughout the match.

King's controlled the pace of play while dominating possession early on. However, they were unable to get a quality look at net until Breanna Jacinto found open space in the sixth minute but saw her attempt go wide left.

The River Hawks had their first shot in the 15th minute on a header that went right of the net. Susquehanna got on the board four minutes later after the Monarchs turned the ball over in the midfield and Emily Sullivan sent the ball towards the box on a counter attack. Julia Hutsko received the pass from Sullivan on the right wing and was able to knock the ball over the head of the King's keeper and into the back of the net for her first goal of the year.

The Monarchs pressed the River Hawk defense the rest of the half but were unable to get a shot off despite dominating possession in their offensive side of the field. King's was able to pass around the Susquehanna defense to get into the box. However, the River Hawks would not give the Monarchs room to get a shot off once they were within shooting range.

KC came out of the locker room in the second half and continued putting pressure on the Susquehanna defense. Natalie Poulton found space just outside the box early in the half to put a shot on goal but Madison Welliver was able to come up with a save.

The River Hawks responded with another counter attack goal in the 60th minute as Erin Wilson sent a long punt down the left side that Kate Cantrell collected and sent a soft looping shot over the keeper's head and into the back of the net for a 2-goal lead.

Finding themselves down two goals with 30 minutes to play, the Monarchs did not give up and pushed to score and cut the lead in half. Danielle Putnam dribbled in between two defender and sent a shot towards goal in the 64th minute but Welliver was able to make a great save keeping it out of goal. A couple minutes later Emma Baumbusch drew a foul right outside the box on the right side. However, King's free kick went into the wall and the River Hawks knocked the ball away from danger.

King's kept the pressure up on the River Hawks, but the stingy Susquehanna defense would not give the Monarchs any room to get a shot off the rest of the match.
In total there were just eight total shots with Susquehanna taking five. A good portion of the match was played in the midfield with the River Hawks recording the only corner kick.

The Monarchs will look to rebound from the tough loss on Saturday night when the team will be on the road for the first time this year. They will travel down to Reading to face Albright College at 8 p.m. in Gene L. Shirk Stadium.
