WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 21, 2018) – King's College volleyball was able to take down Bryn Athyn College in a three-set clincher, putting them on a two-win streak after a victory over Manhattanville College Tuesday. The Monarchs swept the match with straight set scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-13.
The Lions put up a fight in each set but were no match for the Monarchs explosive offense. Senior Rachel Miller, who was recognized before the game for becoming just the fourth player in school history to join the 1000 kill-1000 dig club at King's College, led the team in kills racking up 19 in total. Freshman Taylor Mueller contributed nine digs and a service ace while freshman Wiatt Hoffman tallied 38 assists to propel the Monarchs into scoring position.
The Monarchs struck quick in the first set. Scoring the first two points of the game was Miller and Danielle Kitchner, both with an assist from Hoffman. The Monarchs never let up as the Lions were plagued with errors and at one point led by 10 points after a kill from Sarah Hayward. Bryn Athyn then hit back with a five-point streak to try and even the game. It was Miller who sunk the last kill to end the stanza.
King's took hold of the second set as the teams went back and forth for points. Miller dominated with her six kills and it was in this set that freshman middle hitter Sarah Hayward solidified a career-high of five executions. Bryn Athyn's still put up a fight never trailing more than six points the entire set until King's College was able to hit a three-point streak putting them ahead 23-17. Despite their valiant efforts the Lions lost the set.
The Monarchs dominated the final set as Miller clocked nine kills, Becca Goldberg clinched two putting her total at five this match and Karissa Hartzell supported the defense with five digs. The team went for 11 unanswered points and held down a .367 hitting percentage, the best of all three sets.
