ST. DAVID'S, PA (September 26, 2018) – The Monarchs put up a four-set fight against the Eastern University Eagles for a MAC Freedom matchup but did not come out victorious. With set scores of 23-25, 25-28, 25-13 and 25-9 the King's College now posts a 10-4 season record and sits 1-2 in conference play.
The teams exchanged points back and forth the majority of the first set, both even hitting a few streaks throughout. The Monarchs stayed ahead the entire time until Eastern's Michelle Paulsen tied it up at 14-14. It was here the nail-biter truly began as match point got closer. A service error by Eastern's Lindsey Heisey set the Monarchs on a five-point streak to 23-21 and propelling them to the victory.
Taylor Mueller won match point with a service ace.
Â
In the second set, almost every player that entered the game for King's recorded a kill. Despite those 12 executions, all but one being set up by
Wiatt Hoffmann, and .139 hitting percentage the Eagles were able to take over the set and tie up the match.
Senior
Rachel Miller scored the first kill of the third set where she would ultimately clock in five in an effort to help the team. It was also in this set where freshman libero
Karissa Hartzell would make her first career kill as a Monarch. In the end, the Eagles put up a six-point streak followed by a four and took the third set.
Â
In a last-ditch effort the Monarchs kept their head in the game with kills by Goldberg, Miller, and
Rachel Galante all assisted by Hoffmann. Galante and Hoffman also but up a huge block assist together during a scoring streak by King's. Mueller and
Toni Galasso also did their part to try and hold down the defense with Mueller's 14 digs and Galasso's 12, but it was a service ace by Eastern's Morgan Kline that ended the match.
The Monarch's will stay on the road for their next match as they travel to Chester, PA this Saturday to participate in the Widener University Tri-Match. They will first face Ursinus College at 12:00 p.m. and the host Widener at 2:00 p.m.
