Monarch Field Hockey Falls On Senior Day, 3-1

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 30, 2018) -- The King's College field hockey team celebrated its nine seniors prior to Sunday's game with Marywood University, but the visiting Pacers spoiled the party by earning a 3-1 non-conference win from McCarthy Stadium.

The day started by honoring Kelsey Gabriele, Kelley O'Keefe, Maryrose Mauro, Taylor Runo, Xyzla Russell, Rachel Zultevicz, Natalie Muscatell, Connie Mangino and Katy Higinbothom prior to the game. The first half though would be controlled by the visitors, as Jenna Dickey opened the scoring at 17:48 of the game, finishing a cross from Kenzie Drew for a 1-0 lead.

King's had a good chance right after the goal by Dickey, as O'Keefe took a pass right in front of cage but was denied by Kerri Mountz of Marywood. The Monarchs nearly tied the match in the 34th minute, pressuring and appearing to score as a Rachel Zultevicz shot was stopped by defender Sara Sterchak but the ball looked to roll over the line. The play was whistled dead, and a penalty stroke was awarded, but Gabriele's attempt was stopped with a kick save by Mountz.

After the halftime break, Marywood doubled its lead with the first of two goals by Angela Sanchez on the day at 37:14. Just over four minutes later, the Pacers (7-3) made the score 3-0 as Sanchez tapped in a cross from a Lindsey Quinn cross 41:51 into the game.

The Monarchs would start to turn the momentum after that, and Gabriele had a very strong chance as a screaming shot just went wide at 51:57. Minutes later, King's earned another penalty stroke but an attempt by Natalie Muscatell was deflected by Mountz, up off the cross bar and out for the save to keep the score 3-0.

King's would get on the board with 5:24 to play on an amazing effort, as Gabriele quick-started after a foul and her drive into the circle was tipped up and over Mountz by Zultevicz into the open cage for her first tally of thr season. KC kept the pressure on, but couldn't beat Mountz again as Marywood hung on for the win.

Both teams took 11 shots on the contest, while MU held a slight 8-7 edge in penalty corners.

King's (6-6) will host Alvernia University Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in non-conference action from Betzler Field in McCarthy Stadium.
