WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 8, 2018) –
Emma Baumbusch found
Danielle Putnam open for a breakaway goal to give the King's College women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Juniata College on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
The Monarchs (2-1) found a way to win the defensive battle after a great clearing pass by Baumbusch found Putnam open in the middle of the field with only the keeper to beat. The Eagle keeper came out of net to try to stop the junior forward from advancing closer to the goal when Putnam unleashed a shot from 35 yards out that found the back of the net with 12:57 left in the match.
Juniata (2-2) recorded the first shot of the game early in the fifth minute that King's keeper
Tara Bender was able to wrap up for a save. The Monarchs had a great opportunity in the 11th minute when the Eagles committed a foul just outside the box on the right side. The following free kick went into the Juniata wall and bounced out towards
Alyssa Macher. Macher composed herself and unleashed a shot inside the box that sailed just left of the post.
King's was very physical in the first half denying Juniata any chance at taking a shot. The Monarchs did a great job at controlling the pace of the game but was also called for 10 fouls in the half.
Juniata opened the second half with a shot on goal 1:42 into the period that Bender was able to deny and send out of play for a corner kick. The Eagles had back-to-back corners that the Monarchs thwarted away. KC responded with a shot from
Breanna Jacinto that went wide right and an attempt at goal by
Sophia Sacknievich that Eagle keeper Gianna Canale was able to save.
The Monarchs looked to get the go-ahead goal in the 63rd minute when a corner kick by
Natalie Poulton made its way into scrum of players and the ball found
Allison Andrew open in front of the net. However, her shot was kept out of the net by an Eagle defender after the ball had gotten pass Canale.
The Eagles were able to earn a corner kick in the 77th minute. KC knocked the kick away from the box, but Juniata was able to maintain possession. The Monarchs forced a turnover and got the ball to Baumbusch on the right sideline who sent a pass up to Putnam setting up the game's only goal.
Juniata responded to the goal with a shot by Emma Moreland that Bender was able to knock away. The Eagles pushed to try and even the score, but the Monarchs were able to hold them without a shot the rest of the way preserving Bender's first career shutout.
King's held a 6-4 advantage in shots and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Putnam scored her 12th career goal and second this year, Baumbusch recorded her second assist of the season, and Bender equaled her career high with four saves.
King's will return to the pitch on Wednesday when they host Susquehanna University at 5 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium.
