Men’s Hockey Falls In Overtime At Lebanon Valley

HERSHEY, PA (January 23, 2019) – The King's College men's ice hockey team rallied to force overtime with the Flying Dutchmen on Wednesday night in Hershey but Brett Johnson's second goal of the night 2:54 into the extra session gave host Lebanon Valley College a 4-3 victory at Hersheypark Arena.

LVC improved to 7-8-2 overall, 5-4-2 in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play, and 3-2-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) with the victory. The Monarchs (1-17-0, 1-10-0 UCHC, 0-5-0 MAC) rebounded nicely from a rough night on Friday as they played the Dutchmen close all night. Offensively, the three goals were the most King's has scored in a game since scoring five against Chatham in early November. Defensively, the 34 shots allowed were the third-least KC has conceded this season.

The host scored first 5:28 into the game when Johnson forced a Monarch turnover and sent a pass to Cole Helper who tallied his fourth goal of the season. King's fought right back as Alex Bastone found Jamie Lukas on a long pass up the ice. Lukas skated around a Dutchman defenseman and buried a shot into the back of the net for his team-leading seventh goal. The hosts would retake the lead with 22 seconds left in the period as Brian Hovanec tallied his 12th goal of the season.

In the second period Bastone evened the score with his first collegiate goal off an assist by Luciano Bucci at 12:17. The Dutchmen tallied another late period goal as Johnson scored with the hosts on the penalty kill with 59 seconds left to take a 3-2 lead into the second intermission. That score looked to be how the game would end but a late Monarch rally sent the contest into overtime. After the Monarchs pulled their goalie with 53 seconds left in the period for an extra attacker, Tommy Green sent a shot in on goal that was saved by Tyler Perhac. Cameron Anklewich knocked in the rebound with eight seconds left to even the score. The goal was Anklewich's first of the season and fourth of his career.

Johnson ended the game with his 17th goal of the season off a long pass from Tyler Romel for a breakaway to give LVC their seventh win of the year. He finished the game with three points on two goals and an assist while Helper had a goal and two assists to lead the Flying Dutchmen. Perhac made 26 saves to pick up the win in goal.

Bastone led the Monarchs with his first goal and first assist of the year. Lukas and Anklewich each had one goal on five shots. Bucci had one assist and won a team-best 14 faceoffs on 26 attempts. Brandon Daigle made 30 saves in between the pipes.
King's tied their season-low with just one penalty for two minutes and successfully killed off the power play opportunity. However, the Monarchs were 0-for-4 on the power play as Lebanon Valley committed four penalties for eight minutes.
The Monarchs will have little time to recover from the loss with a tough road trip this weekend. King's will be back in action on Friday night in Maryland facing Stevenson University at 7 p.m. before traveling out to Pittsburgh for a Saturday night contest with Chatham University.
