PITTSBURGH, PA (January 26, 2019) – The King's College men's ice hockey team closed out a very tough road trip with a 4-0 loss at Chatham University on Saturday night at the Frozen Pond Arena in Pittsburgh during a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) battle.
The Monarchs, who were playing their third road game in four days were unable to find the back of the net against the Cougars despite putting 29 shots on goal. The 29 shots equaled their season-high that they have recorded four times this season. The Monarchs have also taken 29 shots in both meetings with Lebanon Valley and in the victory at Neumann.
King's will be glad to not have to leave the area for the next couple of weeks after playing down in Hershey on Wednesday, traveling to the Baltimore area on Friday and playing Stevenson last night and then traveling all the way out to Western Pennsylvania to take on Chatham on Saturday night.
Chatham (5-12-2 (3-8-1 UCHC) got on the board four minutes into the game when Cory King was able to sneak a shot past
Brandon Daigle from the left wing. Dan Bellafiore made it 2-0 at 13:23 with his first goal of the year. The Monarchs trailed by two after a very competitive first period that saw 17 shots, nine by the hosts and eight by KC.
The Cougars increased the lead to three 12:56 into the second period when Tristan Simm rocketed a shot off Daigle's pads and into the back of the net. Michael Lamison rounded out the scoring five seconds before the end of the period as the hosts took advantage of a power play opportunity with his fifth goal of the season. Chatham outshot the Monarchs 21-10 in the period as Daigle made 19 saves.
Daigle finished with 37 saves as neither team was able to score on 11 shots each during the final period.
Cameron Anklewich led the Monarchs with four shots while
Luciano Bucci,
Michael DiSchiavi,
Zack Goodman and
Jack O'Neil took three shots each. Anklewich and Bucci led KC in the faceoff circle all night as King's won 37 of 66 attempts. Anklewich won 14 of his 24 faceoffs while Bucci won 11 of 19.
Tyler O'Mara was also strong in the faceoff circle winning seven of 11.
10 different Cougars found the scoresheet while just Simms and Lamison recording multipoint games with a goal and an assist each. Ricardo Gonzalez made 29 saves to pick up the shutout victory.
The teams combined for 11 penalties with Chatham committing six. However, there were only five total power play opportunities with King's going 0-for-3 and the host going 1-for-2.
King's will be back in action on Thursday night when they make the very short trip to the Toyota Sportsplex on Coal Street to take on UCHC-leading Wilkes University at 7:15 p.m.
