Monarch Women’s Ice Hockey Game Notes – Anna Maria

WILKES-BARRE, PA (January 23, 2019) – The King's College women's ice hockey team will wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule with a pair of home games against first-year program Anna Maria College on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

Last Time Out: The Monarchs were shut out by top-ranked Elmira 16-0 on Tuesday afternoon in a rescheduled game due to the snow storm a couple weeks ago. Kiva Sierra Stoltz and Emma Zeveney split time in goal making a combined 56 saves. The Monarch defense did a great job blocking an additional 18 shots. Stoltz allowed six goals and made 20 saves in 27:16 minutes of work while Zeveney made 36 saves on 46 shots in 32:44 minutes of action.
 
The Amcats dropped a pair of 6-0 games last weekend. AMC fell to Johnson & Wales on Saturday before losing to New England College on Sunday. Gabrielle Ohanesian made 66 saves against the Wildcats while Gabrielle Gibson made 56 saves against the Pilgrims.
 
The Book On The Monarchs (1-18-0, 0-14-0 UCHC, 0-4-0 MAC):
  • The Monarchs, who have faced a grueling schedule the past few weeks, have a slightly easier schedule to close out their season. Their final three opponents have a combined .200 winning percentage.
  • King's has been strong on the defensive end this seasoning blocking 345 shots. Freshmen Meghan Mietlicki and Erin King have led the Monarch defense skating in every game. Mietlicki has blocked a team-leading 56 while Morgan Almond has 51 blocked shots. Sophomore Kelly Tuffy adds 32 blocks while King is fourth with 29.
  • Sophomores goalies Emma Zeveney and Kiva Sierra Stoltz have split time in net this season and both have a save percentage of .867. Zeveney averages a 7.82 GAA ad Stoltz averages a 7.04 GAA. Stoltz was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week after making a season-high 59 saves against Chatham on Saturday.
  • Sophomores Gracen Mahoney and Kellie Munro lead the team in points. Mahoney has seven points on four goals and three assists while Munro totals five points on two goals and three assists.
  • King's has continued to struggle with penalties this season, however they have been strong competitors on the penalty kill. The Monarchs are currently ranked eighth in the nation with 10.7 penalty minutes per game. KC is coming off their best game of the year penalty-wise as the Monarchs were called for a season-low one penalty against Elmira. The Monarchs have been successful on 71 of 96 penalty kills.
  • King's has a combined special teams percentage of 47.8 which ranks 43rd in the nation.
The Book On The Amcats (1-13-0):
  • Anna Maria is in their first season as a varsity program and has recorded a 1-13-0 record so far. The Amcats defeated Salve Regina 2-1 for their first NCAA victory on December 8th. AMC also picked up a 7-0 exhibition victory over Curry back on November 10th.
  • The Amcats have struggled to score this season recording just eight goals in 14 games. Their 0.57 goals per game average is last in Division III.
  • Julianne Nelson has done the majority of the scoring for AMC with five goals and an assist for six points. The forward had two goals in a 4-3 overtime loss at Post and tallied goals in three straight games including the game-winning goal and an assist in the victory of Salve Regina.
  • Defenseman Katahdin Whitney has two goals while Sophia Zimmerman has one goal for the Amcats. Five different skaters have recorded one assist each.
  • Freshman goalie Gabrielle Ohanesian has a .905 save percentage and a GAA of 4.89 in 10 games. Gabrielle Gibson has saved 217 of 239 shots for a save percentage of .908 and a GAA of 5.44 in six games.
  • Anna Maria has recorded 8.6 penalty minutes per game this season which is ranked 31st. They have killed off 46 of 56 power play chances for an 82.1 percentage. AMC has a combined special teams percentage of 46.5 and are still looking for their first power play goal.
Up Next: King's will close out MAC play next weekend with a home-and-home series with Lebanon Valley College. The Monarchs will host the Flying Dutchmen on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. before traveling down to Hershey for a Sunday afternoon puck drop at Hersheypark Arena.
