Eastern Tops King's Field Hockey 6-3 In MAC Freedom Play

ST. DAVIDS, PA (October 12, 2019) -- The King's College field hockey team led after 15 minutes Saturday in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) outing at Eastern University, but the Eagles scored five goals to earn a 6-3 win over the Monarchs.

The Monarchs (5-9, 1-2 MAC Freedom) opened the scoring 6:01 into the game, converting on a penalty corner as Danielle Runo tallied her first of two goals Saturday off of a pass from Hannah Robbins. For Runo, it was her eight goal of the season, which leads the squad.

Eastern waited no time evening the score at a goal apiece, as Joelle Wash scored her first of three goals on the day off of a penalty corner at 7:52 of the contest. Just before the first quarter break, freshman Sara Whitesell scored her fifth tally of the season at 13:58 off an assist from Jessie Smalley to give King's a 2-1 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Eagles would again deadlock the game quickly after the start of the second, as Abigail Geisler scored with help from Harper Sellers. EU took the lead for the first time at 19:45 of the game on a Geisler score, her 10th of the year.

After the break, Eastern doubled its advantage at 4-2 after the second goal of the game by Wash. In the fourth quarter, King's pulled to within a goal at 4-3 thanks to the second of the day from Runo with help from Annie Ryan, and nearly tied the game up minutes after that but back-to-back shots from Runo and Bailey Jordan were denied.

That gave the Eagles momentum as Geisler scored her third of the day to give Eastern some insurance, and Wash finished the scoring with just over a minute to go to ice the game for the Eagles.

Eastern outshot the visiting Monarchs 12-5 on the day, though King's held a 9-7 edge in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Brianne Maluda made three stops for King's.

The Monarchs (5-9, 1-2 MAC Freedom) will return to conference play next Friday evening at 7 p.m., taking on Delaware Valley University in Wilkes-Barre, PA in McCarthy Stadium Friday, October 18.
