READING, PA (October 2, 2019) – The King's College field hockey team fell behind early at Alvernia University, and couldn't make up the quick 2-0 deficit in falling 4-1 in road non-conference play from the Alvernia Turf Field.
Things didn't start the way that head coach Martha Kerrick would have liked on Wednesday afternoon, as the host Golden Wolves got on the board just 6:08 into the contest thanks to a McKenzy Lilliock goal. Less than two minutes later, Morgan Mondschein tallied on a breakaway to give Alvernia a 2-0 lead at 7:27 of the game.
The Monarchs would start to settle into the game, and picked up their first penalty corner at 19:33 of the game, thanks to some nifty passing in the circle. On the ensuing corner,
Lauren Rowski inserted to
Hannah Robbins who fed the ball back to her left to Rowski. The junior midfielder sent the ball back towards the back post, and junior
Danielle Runo tipped the ball past a diving defender to make it 2-1.
Minutes later just before halftime, Alvernia would regain its two-goal lead as Alyssa Krady scored off a pass from Mondschein to send the game into the break at 3-1 in favor of the hosts. Alvernia held a 7-2 edge in shot attempts in the opening two quarters.
After the break, the Monarchs nearly tallied early in the third quarter off of a shot from Robbins that was tipped off the bottom of the crossbar by
Jolee Treslar but was cleared out before King's could tap in the rebound. Later in the third junior goalkeeper
Brianne Maluda made a great save with just over four minutes left in the quarter, throwing her left leg out and denying Krady of her second of the day.
The Golden Wolves would take advantage of a penalty corner late in the third, making the game 4-1 as Lilliock deflected in a shot from Erica Groves at 44:27 of the game. In the fourth, King's had a few chances to claw back into the game but couldn't take advantage as they fell on the road Wednesday.
King's was outshot on the afternoon 15-7 by their hosts, while Alvernia held an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners. Runo led all Monarch players with four shots, putting two on goal including her tally, while Rowski and
Lexi Prowker were the lone two players to play all 60 minutes for King's. Maluda made three saves for King's, while Emma Beamesderfer made two saves for the hosts.
The Monarchs continue their road swing on Saturday afternoon, taking on Misericordia University in Dallas, PA in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action from McGeehan Field.
