DALLAS, PA (October 5, 2019) -- It took over 64 minutes to a goal to be scored Saturday in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) field hockey play between King's College and host Misericordia University, but King's junior
Lauren Rowski tallied 4:05 into the first overtime to give the Monarchs a huge 1-0 win.
The victory was big for many reasons, as it gave King's (5-7, 1-1 MAC Freedom) its first conference win of the year but it also snapped a three-game losing skid. The host Cougars held the run of action in the first quarter, but junior goalkeeper
Brianne Maluda was brilliant, making three tough stops to keep the game goalless.
King's started to get things going in the second period, but back-to-back yellow cards made the Monarchs have to kill off four straight minutes of playing a person down. The King's defensive unit was up to the task, holding Misericordia without a shot during that time while also earning two corners. In the end though, neither team would score before halftime.
After intermission, Misericordia put together a spurt of strong play byt Maluda made two more big stops to deny the hosts of the opening goal. The fourth quarter saw the most action in regulation, and King's nearly got on the board in the 53rd minute but a
Hannah Robbins shot was saved off the line.
In the closing minutes, each team had strong chances by MU's Katelyn Campbell and Maluda each made huge saves to send the game to overtime. For King's, it was its second straight conference overtime contest, falling 4-3 in overtime last Saturday to Stevens.
The karma would come back around though for the Monarchs, as King's would take control of the overtime period just over three minutes into the extra session.
After earning an penalty corner with 6:06 to go in the first overtime, the insert from Rowski went out to Robbins. The sophomore midfielder pulled the ball back and shot the ball into the circle towards freshman
Sara Whitesell. Whitesell's attempt at a shot missed, but it pulled the goalkeeper out of position, and Rowski was there to sweep the loose ball into the cage for the game-winner.
It marked the second straight season that King's has defeated the Cougars 1-0, as King's knocked off MU in 2018 on a
Kelsey Gabriele goal in Wilkes-Barre. Misericordia held a slight 12-9 shot advantage, while the two squads each posted nine penalty corners apiece.
Maluda made a season-high seven saves for King's in earning her second shutout on the campaign.
Emily Sims and Rowski each posted three shots apiece, and the trio of
Annie Ryan,
Jennifer Smalley and
Lexi Prowker were very strong defensively.
King's will jump back out of conference play on Wednesday evening, taking on the Dutchwomen of Lebanon Valley College at 7 p.m. in action from McCarthy Stadium.
