WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 2, 2019) --- Freshman
Erica Blackburn equaled her season high of six saves to earn her second shutout of the year as the King's College women's soccer team played visiting Ursinus College to a 0-0 draw on Wednesday.
In a defensive battle Blackburn was the star of the match making a few spectacular saves to keep the Bears out of the back of the net. Four of her saves came in the second half when Ursinus put a lot of pressure on the Monarch defense attempting six of their 11 shots. While the Bears (3-4-2) held a 11-6 shot advantage in the match, King's won the possession battle holding the ball for 54 percent of the 110 minutes.
The majority of the match was played in the midfield with both defenses locking down once the offenses got the ball into the box. Blackburn's most impressive save of the night came in the 54th minute as Morgan Raley sent a shot a little under the crossbar. Blackburn reached up knocking what looked like the go-ahead goal off the crossbar and back into play.
Blackburn made two more saves in the 71
st minute on shots from distance right to the center of the net. Neither team was able to get a shot on goal in the extra session. King's best chances came in the first 15 minutes as
Bekah Araujo and
Emily Harrington tried to go low against Sabrina Doherty but were denied.
Breanna Jacinto,
Angelina Falcone,
Natalie Poulton, and
Casey Genovese all had a shot each that were off the mark. Defensively the Monarchs received strong games from
Abby Castle,
Kara Keim, and
Alyssa Macher
The Monarchs will return to the pitch on Saturday when they host Eastern University in the first Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom match of the year. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm at McCarthy Stadium in an important conference matchup.
