Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late Goal By Eastern Spoils Women’s Soccer Conference Opener

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 5, 2019) --- Nicole Weenink scored the lone goal of the match in the 83rd minute to give the Eastern University women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over King's College in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom opener on Saturday afternoon from McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.

The Monarchs (5-5-1, 0-1-0 MAC Freedom) had a strong defensive performance all match not allowing the Eagles (6-4-0, 1-0-0) a shot on goal until Weenink received a pass down the left side and used her track speed to beat a Monarchs defender into the box where she found the lower right for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

In a defensive battle played mostly in the midfield, King's held possession for 51 percent of the match while putting four shots on goal. Emily Harrington had three total shots in the match including two on goal while Breanna Jacinto put both of her shots on goal.

The Eagles took the first two shots of the match in the 15th minute as attempts from Zoe Galvin and Jenna Linstra went wide right. Harrington found space in the 31st minute as she beat her defender down the left side, but Eagle keeper Kerry Phillips was able to knock handle her shot attempt keeping the match scoreless.

King's came out strong in the opening minutes of the second half and Jacinto found space outside the box in the 53rd minute unleashing a rocket towards goal. The ball went right at Phillips however, and she was able to knock it away. Jacinto would have another great look from distance in the 65th minute as she tried to beat Phillips to the left post, but once again the sophomore keeper was able to keep the ball out of the back of the net. A few minutes later Harrington beat her defender down the left side and tried to sneak the ball inside the left post. Phillips, however, once again denied the Monarch attack.

Abby Castle, Angelina Falcone, Kara Keim, Alyssa Macher and Bekah Araujo all played fantastic for 90 minutes limiting the Eagles to just five total shots and one shot on goal.

The Monarchs will look to rebound from the tough loss on Wednesday when they travel down to Pomona, NJ for the last non-conference match of the year. Kickoff against the Ospreys of Stockton University will be at 5 pm from G. Larry James Stadium.
