Monarchs Drop Tough MAC Freedom Road Battle

DALLAS, PA (October 22, 2019) -- The King's College women's volleyball team fell at Misericordia, 3-0, in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC Freedom) action. The Monarchs fall to 20-4 overall, 3-3 in MAC Freedom play with one conference match remaining in the regular season.

Misericordia started the match strong storming out to a 13-5 lead in the first set that the Monarchs could not answer as the Cougars took set one, 25-14. King's saw Misericordia jump to another early lead, 12-5, before answering with three straight points to inch within four on a kill by freshman Marta Pawka and two Cougars errors. Misericordia took a 22-12 lead before King's went on a 9-2 run, including five straight with Misericordia one point away from taking the set, as they inched within three, 24-21, before a Monarchs error gave the Cougars set two, 25-21, and the lead, 2-0.

The final set of the match saw the teams fight, as there were three ties and three lead changes that saw the Monarchs with their first lead of the game, 7-5, before the Cougars recorded five straight points to give them the lead, 10-7. Misericordia continued with their momentum, building a 15-10 lead before King's responded with a 7-2 run of their own led by sophomore Becca Goldberg with three kills and sophomore Grace Frati with one to tie the set, 17-17. The Cougars then rallied with six unanswered points, 23-17, that the Monarchs could not overcome as they fell in the final set, 25-21, and the match, 3-0.

Goldberg led the offense for the Monarchs with 11 kills, hitting .250, and adding three block assists. Anchoring the defense were sophomores Taylor Mueller with 12 digs and Karissa Hartzell with eight. Sophomore Wiatt Hoffmann dished out 18 assists, and at the net sophomore Olivia Bunch added three block assists.

As a team, the Monarchs held the advantage in blocks (6-5), while totaling 24 kills off 24 assists and adding 39 digs.

The Monarchs are back in action on Saturday as they travel to Rowan University for a tri-match with Rowan and Wheaton College at 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm.
