Monarchs Drop Two in Road Trimatch

GLASSBORO, NJ (October 26, 2019) -- At Rowan University, the King's College women's volleyball team dropped both games in the road tri-match to the host Owls, 3-0, and the Wheaton College Lyons, 3-1, to fall to 20-6 overall for the season.

vs. Wheaton:

In their opening match, the Monarchs started strong, taking their only set win of the day against the Lyons, 25-21, as they took advantage of 17 Lyons' errors in the set. Wheaton responded, as they jumped to an early 10-0 lead in the second set that was too much for the Monarchs to handle before dropping set two, 25-7.

Set three saw the Monarchs take an early 2-1 lead behind kills by sophomores Becca Goldberg and Cleo Schultz before Wheaton scored six unanswered points. King's would continue to battle as they tied the match at 16 on a kill by sophomore Grace Frati, but Wheaton closed the set on a 9-6 run to take the third set, 25-22. In the final set of the match, the Lyons came out to another early lead, 8-0, over the Monarchs. King's closed the gap, 20-19, off a service ace by sophomore Taylor Mueller before Wheaton used a 5-0 run to end the set, 25-19, and take the match, 3-1.

Goldberg and Frati led the offense for the Monarchs, both totaling seven kills. Sophomore Wiatt Hoffmann dished out 21 assists and added 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Mueller led the defense again with a match-high 11 digs while adding four assists and four of the team's five service aces. At the net, sophomore Olivia Bunch totaled three block assists, and Goldberg added two.
 
As a team, the Monarchs totaled 29 kills off 28 assists, hitting  .010 for the match. They also held the advantage in digs over Wheaton, 46-37.

vs. Rowan:

The Monarchs started this match with a kill by sophomore Sarah Hayward, but then Rowan used a 12-4 run to maintain a lead and take the first set, 25-12. The second set started as each team traded points, but the Owls rallied behind four straight points to take a five-point lead, 12-7, and continued the momentum to end the set, 25-18.

The final set of the day started strong for the Monarchs as they began with an early 9-1 lead behind three kills by Goldberg. Rowan answered with four unanswered points before trading points with King's as the score read, 14-11. The Owls used a rally of six straight points to take the lead, 17-14, but then the Monarchs tallied five straight of their own behind two kills by sophomore Christie Brown, two kills by Goldberg, and a kill by sophomore Danielle Kitchner. Rowan ended the match on an 8-4 run to give them the set final, 25-23, and the match, 3-0.

Goldberg led again with 10 kills on 20 attempts, hitting .500 for the match. Freshman Caitlyn Pepper dished out 18 assists and added  eight digs, and Hoffmann added seven. The defense was led by Mueller with a match-high 20 digs, and sophomore Karissa Hartzell added 13.

As a team, the Monarchs finished the match hitting .061 compared to the Owls' .154. They recorded 32 kills off 30 assists, while holding the edge in digs (66-58).

The Monarchs are back in action for their final week of the regular season as they travel to DeSales University on Wednesday starting at 7:00 pm in an extremely important MAC Freedom match that will determine the Monarchs' chance for a spot in the MAC Freedom Conference Tournament.
