WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 9, 2019) -- The King's College field hockey team saw the visiting Dutchwomen of Lebanon Valley College score two goals in both the second and fourth quarters, knocking off the Monarchs 4-1 in non-conference play from McCarthy Stadium.
After a scoreless first quarter, Lebanon Valley scored the first goal of the contest as Faith Dinger tipped in a Danielle Alba shot at 19:49 of the game to put LVC up 1-0. Less than 10 minutes later, Abbie Keath scored unassisted just before halftime to put the visitors up two.
The Monarchs (5-8) got their best scoring chance of the game minutes after the second goal for LVC, as
Hannah Robbins fired a shot off a penalty corner. The ensuing rebound went to
Lauren Rowski, but her attempt at the yawning cage was saved by defender Alida Steenkamer just before it crossed the goal line.
The third quarter favored Lebanon Valley, but King's was stout in the circle, while junior goalkeeper
Brianne Maluda was strong as well. After back-to-back saves from Maluda in the 34th minute, Taylor Pentz appeared to tip in a shot on the back post but Rowski was there to record the defensive save for King's.
In the fourth quarter, Lebanon Valley added to its lead as Hannah Simon deflected a shot from Alba past Maluda to make the score 3-0 at 47:57. King's would get some things going offensively after that third tally from LVC, taking advantage of their next penalty corner.
After an insert from
Bailey Jordan,
Hannah Robbins fired a shot from the top of the circle that was saved by Corinne Kearney. The rebound went right ot freshman
Jessie Smalley, who blasted a drive from five yards away into the cage for her fourth goal of the season.
King's stayed on the attack and almost pulled to within one with five minutes to play, but sophomore
Emily Sims had her shot off a corner saved and the rebound attempt from
Jolee Treslar was nicely stopped by Kearney and pushed wide.
With 1:40 to go in the game, LVC put the contest away as Hannah Shirey deflected a ball out of midair off a penalty corner play, as Dinger's shot was tipped into the air, tipped by Ashley Sheibley and deposited on the left post from Shirey.
Lebanon Valley outshot the Monarchs 26-10 on the contest, earning a 16-7 edge in shots on goal. The Dutchwomen also posted a slight 11-8 advantage on penalty corners. Maluda finished with a season-high 11 saves for the Monarchs, while Kearney chalked up five saves for LVC.
King's is back in action on the road Saturday, taking on Eastern University at 11 a.m. in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play from St. Davids, PA.
