WILKES-BARRE, PA (November 24, 2019) -- An uptempo game and hot shooting allowed the King's College women's basketball team to cruise to a 93-37 win over Marywood University on the second day of the Cross County Tournament. With the win, the Monarchs get back in the win column, improving to 3-2 for the season.
King's started the game firing as senior
Mackenzie Yori connected for a three to give the Monarchs the early lead. Marywood responded and began the back-and-forth battle of the first quarter, leading by as much as three points, 14-11, before the Monarchs scored eight unanswered points to take the lead, 21-14, with 2:14 left in the opening quarter and would not look back from there. They continued to build their lead in the second as they led by 16, 50-34, at the half.
The second half saw the Monarchs continue their momentum, scoring the first 11 points of the half, and they increased their lead to 33 points by the end of the third quarter as sophomore
Emily Kriston hit a driving layup to beat the buzzer. The Monarchs saw their largest lead with 9:19 left in the game off a fastbreak layup by freshman
Emily Morano off her own steal to give King's a 38-point advantage, 83-45. They held at least a 31-point lead the remainder of the game, posting the final, 93-57.
Yori led the Monarchs offense, totaling 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-6 from three. Senior
Rebecca Prociak recorded her second double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds with two blocks to earn All-Cross County Tournament Team Honors, averaging 19.5 points and 7.5 rebounds with four assists, three blocks, and a steal.
Sophomore
Samantha Rajza and Morano were the other two Monarchs in double-figures, both totaling 11 as Rajza shot 4-for-9 and Morano connected on 5-of-10. Kriston also filled the stat sheet in the win, dishing out a game-high eight assists, a season-high six steals, five points, and three boards. Coming off the bench to total a career-high nine points on 3-of-6 shooting and adding two boards in just 17 minutes of action was sophomore
Kristen Coleman.
As a team, the Monarchs shoto 48.6 percent for the game on 36-of-74 shooting, including 11-for-22 from beyond the arc for 50.0 percent. King's out-rebounded the Pacers, 43-39, and dished out 22 assists and swiped 17 steals. Inside the box score, the Monarchs outscored the Pacers in points off turnovers (28-8), second chance points (10-6), points in the paint (40-18), and fast break points (22-13).
The Monarchs are on a break and will return to play on Wednesday, December 4 as they travel to face Elizabethtown, starting at 6:00 p.m.
