HERSHEY, PA (November 9, 2019) --- Freshmen
Jerry Scatena and
Tommy Cahill scored their first collegiate goals and
Tyler Sayger made 35 saves in net to lead the King's College men's ice hockey team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over host Lebanon Valley College from Hersheypark Arena in Hershey on Saturday evening.
The win for the Monarchs (1-2-0, 1-2-0 UCHC, 1-1-0 MAC) was their first-ever Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) victory while giving them an important three points in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) standings. Head coach Stephen Mallaro stated "It was a team effort. From start to finish, we played hard selfless hockey. Hats off to Lebanon Valley for their efforts. We believe the UCHC is the strongest D-III league in the country and every night is a battle."
A battle it was as all three goals were scored in the first 16 minutes of the game. LVC's Austen Zimmerman gave the hosts the early lead as he scored at the 9:42 mark. King's came right back a couple minutes later with
Eric Menninger forcing a turnover and sending a pass up to Scatena with just the goalie to beat. Scatena found the back of the net for his first career goal while Menninger picked up his first assist of the year and second of the defenseman's career.
The Monarchs took the lead at the 15:47 mark of the period as Cahill lit the lamp for the first time as a Monarch off assists the first assists of the season by sophomore
Michael DiSchiavi and freshman
Josh Edwards. DiSchiavi recorded his fifth career point on the play with his fifth assist in a Monarch sweater.
The one-goal advantage would wind up being all that KC would need as Sayger was terrific in net making 30 consecutive saves to pick up the win in his first collegiate appearance. The freshman made 10 saves in the first period, 11 in the second, and then 14 more in the third including nine in the final five minutes as the Dutchmen pushed for the game-tying goal. The Monarch defense also helped blocking seven shots in that same time frame.
The Monarchs were much better on the penalty kill against LVC than they were on Friday night against Elmira holding the Dutchmen without a goal on four power play opportunities. KC finished the game with seven penalties for 25 minutes while Leb Val totaled seven penalties for 14 minutes. The Dutchmen held a 36-13 shot advantage in the game. Henry Burns got the loss in goal for the hosts making 11 saves.
Cahill led the Monarchs with four shots while also winning 13 faceoffs on 27 attempts.
Cameron Anklewich led the Monarchs in the faceoff circle winning 14 of his 25 attempts.
Mallaro is "really proud of the work we have put in as a group. It started last spring, having the right mindset and the right people leading our group. We are looking forward to a good week of practice and heading to Chatham on Friday night."
The Monarchs will look to make it two wins in a row next Friday as they travel out to Pittsburgh for a 7:10 pm puck drop against the Cougars of Chatham University.
