PITTSTON, PA (December 7, 2019) --- Sophomore
Alex Acosta recorded four points as the King's College men's ice hockey team recorded their best offensive performance of the season in a tight 6-4 loss to defending United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) champion Manhattanville on Saturday from the Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston.
Acosta was a part of every goal scored by the Monarchs recording three secondary assists and scoring his first collegiate goal to tie the game at two with 3:56 to go in the first period. King's (1-7-0, 16-0 UCHC) got off to a great start against the Valiants (5-6-1, 3-5-0 UCHC) as they earned an early power play opportunity and put three shots on goal during the advantage. MC goalie Mac Vail stopped all three attempts to give the visitors a successful penalty kill.
M'Ville struck first as Noah Bradley find the back of the net for the third time this year 7:31 into the game. Seven minutes later Niko Happo made it 2-0 with a power play goal. The Monarchs roared right back 24 seconds later as
Tommy Cahill lit the lamp for the third time in his rookie season off assists by
Michael DiSchiavi and Acosta. Acosta then tied the game as he knocked in a wide shot from Cahill. Manhattanville retook the lead with 1:37 to go in the period as Ryan Jackson scored his second of the year.
Jack O'Neil evened things back up again 4:46 into the second period with his first career goal as the junior defenseman capitalized on KC having a two-man advantage on the ice. The Valiants responded with two power play goals by Bradley and Prestia to take a 5-3 lead with 11:45 to go in the period. DiSchiavi sent the Monarchs into the break down just one goal as the sophomore tallied his third goal of the season off assists from
Cameron Anklewich and
Alex Acosta. The visitors closed out the scoring just 28 seconds into the third period as Ken McLean scored his seventh goal of the season.
Four of Manhattanville's six goals were scored on the power play and two of King's goals were with a man advantage as the teams combined for 25 penalties and 93 penalty minutes. KC was 2-for-7 on their power plays and 7-for-11 on the penalty kill.
The Monarchs' 11 points on four goals and seven assists were the most in a game since a 6-5 overtime loss to Chatham last November. It is also the second-most points KC has recorded in a game behind only the 12 points against Chatham.
King's will return to the ice on January 3, 2020 with perhaps their toughest test of the year as they travel to SUNY Geneseo to take on the highly ranked and national title contenders in Wilson Ice Arena at 7 pm. Geneseo was ranked as high as number two in Division III this season and were fifth in this week's poll.
