Third-Ranked SUNY Geneseo Defeats Monarchs Men’s Hockey in Return To The Ice

GENESEO, NY (January 3, 2020) --- The King's College men's ice hockey team traveled up to Geneseo, NY on Friday evening where they dropped an 11-0 decision to third-ranked SUNY Geneseo in their first game in nearly a month.

The Monarchs (1-8-0), who last played on December 7, 2019, had a few great opportunities to score in the game but were unable to light the lamp against the 16th-ranked scoring defense. King's had a few breakaway attempts in the second period and were denied of the back of the net by Matt Petizian. The Knights (9-2-1) entered the game as the third-ranked scoring offense in Division III and received a complete team effort as 16 skaters recorded at least one point. Geneseo scored five times in the first, four times in the second period, and twice in the third.

King's did a great job keeping out of the penalty box in the game recording just two penalties to limit Geneseo's third-ranked power play off the ice for most of the game. However, the Knights capitalized on both of their power play opportunities while holding KC off the board on three penalty kills.

Tommy Cahill and Alex Acosta led the Monarchs with three shots each while Josh Edwards added two. Tyler Sayger made 37 saves in net including a few fantastic stops to keep the high-scoring Knights from more goals. The Knights had a 48-13 shot advantage and King's blocked a season high 23 shots. Tyler O'Mara had a team-high five blocked shots in his first action of the year. Jack O'Neil and Keaton Caplis each had three blocks for KC.

Andrew Romano and Conlan Keenan led the Geneseo attack with four points each on two goals and two assists apiece. Gordon Helmuth added two goals while Tyson Empey, Brendan Miller, David Szmyd, and Ryan Burnett had a goal and an assist each. Tanner Salsberry, Devin Brink, Henry Cleghorn, and Andrew Hart each recorded two assists. Petizian made 11 saves in just over 50 minutes of action before being replaced by Christian Roth. Roth tallied two saves to preserve the team shutout.

King's will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against another SUNYAC team in The College At Brockport. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 pm from Tuttle North Ice Arena in Brockport, NY.
