Women’s Indoor Track and Field Breaks Three School Records At Season Opener

READING, PA (December 7, 2019) – The King's College women's indoor track and field teams had an excellent start to the season as the squad broke three program records at the season-opening Golden Wolves Rust Buster.

There was no team scoring at the invitational.

On the Track 
200 Meter Dash
Freshman Angelina Broga qualified for the MAC Championships and finished seventh out of 23 sprinters with a time of 28.35 seconds. Broga finished fourth in the first of four heats. Sarah Ross was right behind her in the heat crossing the line in 29.15 seconds to finish 10th overall. Messiah had the top two finishers in the heat and top five overall. Taylor Wiederrecht won in 26.99 seconds while Kathryn Wiederrecht was second in 27.32 seconds. Kelsie Kennedy won the second heat and was third overall in 27.90 seconds.
  
400 Meter Dash
Kailey Orzechowski ran a career best time of 1:04.97 to finish first in the field of six and qualify for the MAC Championships. The junior crushed the field winning by close to eight seconds while beating her previous best time of 1:06.14. Gretchen Young of Hood was a distant second in 1:12.70 while Delaware Valley's Alexa Elliot was third in 1:14.78.
  
800 Meter Run
Beth Albright qualified for the MAC Championships and finished fourth out of 12 runners with a career best time of 2:33.32. The sophomore beat her freshman season best time of 2:35.89. Alvernia's Katelyn Schoener ran 2:30.86 to win while Messiah had seven of the top nine times. Olvia Cory was second in 2:31.38 while Laura Kruth was third in 2:32.91. Sarah Zultevicz crossed the line in 3:08.54 to finished 11th as she looks to qualify for the pentatlon.
 
60 Meter Hurdles
Freshman Kristine Krumpfer finished fifth of eight with a MAC qualifying time of 10.57 seconds in her first collegiate race. Alvernia freshman Amanda Tony won with a time of 9.63 seconds while Messiah junior Kathryn Wiederrecht was second in 9.64 seconds. Alvernia's Susanna Pirollo was a close third in 9.65 seconds.
  
4x200 Meter Relay
The Monarchs cruised to victory in the four-team field with a school record time of 1:52.85. The team of Sarah Ross, Kailey Orzechowski, Angelina Broga, and Madde Wnukowski won by over five seconds over Goucher's "A" squad who finished in 1:57.91. The Monarchs lowered the previous school record of 1:53.53 that was ran at the MAC Championships last year. Albright College was third with a time of 1:59.19 while Goucher's "B" team was fourth in 2:15.71.
  
4x400 Meter Relay
KC finished second among a trio of Messiah teams with a time of 4:29.48. Sarah Ross led off for King's and was followed by Kailey Orzechowski, Angelina Broga, and Beth Albright. Wnukowski was scheduled to be the Monarchs' anchor leg but was a late scratch from the relay team and replaced by Albright. MC's "A" squad won in 4:24.16 while their "C" team ran 4:33.50 to finish third. Messiah "B" finished fourth in 4:35.97.
  
Field Events
High Jump
Sarah Zultevicz finished second out of five jumpers with a school record and MAC qualifying height of 1.52 meters (4'11.75"). The junior entered the competition at 1.35 meters and cleared her first attempt at 1.35 meters, 1.40 meters, and 1.43 meters. It took her two attempts to clear 1.46 meters before she cleared 1.49 meters on her first attempt. Zultevicz fouled on her first two attempts at 1.52 meters but was able to successfully complete her third jump. She then missed all three attempts at 1.55 meters. Zultevicz improved her own previous record of 1.48 meters she jumped at the MAC Championships as a freshman. All-American Taylor Wiederrecht of Messiah topped the field with a height of 1.65 meters (5'5"). The senior either passed or cleared each height on her first attempt before missing all three jumps at 1.70 meters which is 0.01 meters under her career best height. Albright junior Jaelynn Walker was third with a height of 1.49 meters (4'10.50").
  
Long Jump
Sarah Ross finished fifth out of 11 jumpers with a MAC qualifying mark of 4.79 meters (15'8.75") on her sixth attempt of the day. The junior qualified for the finals with marks of 4.54 meters, 4.72 meters, and 4.52 meters in the prelims. She fouled on her first two attempts of the finals before hitting her best mark on her final jump. Sarah Zultevicz finished eighth with a mark of 4.63 meters (15'2.25") on her fifth jump. She started with a mark of 4.45 meters before fouling on her second jump. Zultevicz qualified for the finals with a mark of 4.59 meters on her third attempt. In the finals she recorded marks of 4.42 meters, 4.63 meters, and 4.51 meters. Messiah's Taylor Wiederrecht won the event with a mark of 5.08 meters (16'8") on her first attempt of the day. Alvernia's Madison Wolf was second with a mark of 4.98 meters (16'4.25") on her first jump while teammate Chaslin Hoover was third with a jump of 4.97 meters (16'3.75") on her third attempt.
  
Triple Jump
Freshmen Gabriella Conforti and Kristine Krumpfer both beat the school record and qualified for the MAC Championships while finishing second and fourth out of five competitors. Conforti is the new record holder with a mark of 10.34 meters (33'11.25") on her second attempt. She hit 10.31 meters on her first jump and then fouled on her third attempt. In the finals she jumped 10.20 meters, fouled, and then finished with a mark of 9.99 meters. Krumpfer had a mark of 10.24 meters (33'7.25") on her fourth jump. The freshman had marks of 9.75 meters, 9.76 meters, and 10.09 meters on her first third attempts. She hit 10.05 meters on her fifth jump before fouling on her final attempt. The duo beat the old record of 10.21 meters that Marcyssa Brown accomplished at the MAC Championships in 2017. Alvernia freshman Amanda Tony finished first with a jump of 11.32 meters (37'1.75") on her second attempt. Her teammate, Madison Wolf, was third with a mark of 10.25 meters (33'7.5") on her fourth attempt.
 
Shot Put
Danielle Kitchner had a career best and MAC qualifying throw of 9.72 meters (31'10.75") on her third attempt to finish sixth out of 12 throwers. The sophomore started off with marks of 9.34 meters and 9.45 meters on her first two throws to better her previous career best of 9.32 meters. In the finals she threw 9.44 meters, 9.52 meters, and 9.51 meters. Sarah Zultevicz had a mark of 8.32 meters (27'3.75") on her third and final attempt. She recorded tosses of 7.91 meters and 8.09 meters on her first two attempts. Alvernia's Najilah Cordon-Downing won with a mark of 10.79 meters (35'5") on her fifth toss. Teammate Samantha Peterson was second with a toss of 10.19 meters (33'5.25") on her sixth attempt while Albright junior Cynthia Thorngate was third with a mark of 10.10 meters (33'1.75") on her first throw.
  
The Monarchs will now be off until mid January when they will compete in the Orange and Maroon Classic at Susquehanna University on January 17 and 18.
