WILKES-BARRE, PA (March 13, 2019) -- The King's College women's lacrosse team scored the game's first 11 goals and put things on cruise control from then on as the Monarchs topped visiting Penn State Abington 18-5 in non-conference play from McCarthy Stadium Wednesday evening.
The win snapped a four-game skid for the Monarchs, as King's (2-4) moved to 2-0 at home this season powered by a strong first-half effort. Freshman
Jen O'Connor tallied eight points on the night on four goals and four assists to lead the way for King's, while five other players had two or more points in the win.
O'Connor started the scoring barrage with her first of the day just 37 seconds into the game, followed by an
Emily Sims tally 59 seconds later to give King's a 2-0 lead. O'Connor and fellow newcomer
Bailey Jordan followed with unassisted strikes to make it 4-0 at 24:52 of the first half.
Sophomore
Kylie McCarthy would up the King's edge to five after a nice pass from classmate
Emma Lehman, and freshman Natasha dented the twine 1:05 later at 22:39. King's continued to add on, ending the first-half run at 11-0 after a goal from sophomore
Mary Kate Klodarska with 15 minutes to play.
After Melissa Felicetti scored to get the Nittany Lions (0-2) on the board, freshman
Bethany Cabrera recorded her first career point by setting up Klodarska to give King's a 12-1 edge. A few minutes later, junior defender
Mia Dardanelli netted her first career goal on a free position shot before O'Connor ended the first-half scoring with an unassisted goal at 1:43.
The second half was closer, but King's moved players around the entire period while rolling to the victory. In addition to her point output, O'Connor chalked up 12 draw controls, which tied for the third-most in program history, and posted four ground balls as well.
Klodarska finished with four goals, needing just five shots on the night, and McCarthy tallied two goals, two assists, three ground balls and five draw controls. Lehman posted two scores and an assist, and Sims registered a goal, assist and four ground balls. Sophomore
Chloe Rizzo played well for King's, scoring her first career goal in the second half.
Freshman
Brianna Raucci also scored for King's, and
Kelly Pierce chalked up two ground balls. King's was 3-for-6 on free position attempts on the night, outshooting their opponents 33-10. The Monarchs were also 11-of-12 on clears, while forcing six Nittany Lion turnovers on clear attempts. Sophomore
Orla Cottell made three saves in the victory, which was her ninth as a Monarch.
Lillian Diesh scored twice for the Nittany Lions (0-2), and Cheyanne Grumm posted eight saves for Penn State Abington.
King's is off this weekend, but travels to Lebanon Valley College next Tuesday, March 19 at 7 p.m. in Annville, PA at the Arnold Sports and Heilman Center.
