WILKES-BARRE, PA (March 30, 2019) -- The visiting Roadrunners of Ramapo College posted six consecutive goals over an 11-minute stretch of the opening stanza, pulling away for the 15-9 win over the hosting King's College women's lacrosse team in action from McCarthy Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Despite the score, the Monarchs played very well at spurts and saw both the offensive and defensive units clicking on all cylinders during times. King's chalked up a season-high 12 caused turnovers in the game and picked up a season-high 25 ground balls.
Unfortunately though, King's struggled with turnovers in the opening stanza, as Ramapo played a tough, physical style in the midfield. That style resulted in five turnovers on 11 clear attempts, which fueled the deciding run for the visitors.
Ramapo would get on the board first at 26:54 on a goal by Molly Warner, but that was answered nearly four minutes later with sophomore
Emma Lehman's first of the day with help from freshman
Jen O'Connor. The two teams would exchange tallies over the next 10 minutes before Gabi Davison scored her 17th of the season to earn the game's first multi-goal lead at 5-3.
The six-goal run for Ramapo would be capped by two scores from Ava Rinaldi before sophomore
Kylie McCarthy netted her 11th of the season on a nice Lehman look to make it 9-4. Rinaldi would score her fourth of the game just before halftime for RCNJ (6-2) to make it 10-4 at the break.
The Roadrunners would get two Nicole Joskot goals right out of the locker room to take a 12-4 lead, btu King's responded with back-to-back strikes from freshman
Emily Sims and Lehman to make it 12-6 with 21 minutes to go.
The two teams would play the rest of the game even, but the hole was a little too much for the Monarchs to dig out of in dropping their first home game of the season.
The Monarchs got another strong game out of O'Connor, as she finished with a team-high three goals, adding two assists, eight shots, three ground balls, two caused turnovers and a game-best 10 draw controls. Over the last two games, O'Connor has posted 22 draw wins, and now leads the conference in controls with 67.
Lehman continued to have a strong season for King's offensively, as she upped her goal tally for the year to 13 with two goals and an assist. McCarthy eclipsed her point total from all of last season just 10 games into the season, as she finished with a goal and an assist, and now has multiple points in four of her last five games. She also posted five ground balls, one short of her career-high.
Mary Kate Klodarska finished with two assists for King's, as she now has more points than all of last year and her 12 helpers is one shy of her 2018 total. Sims added two goals on two shots for King's, and
Kelly Pierce was once again strong all over the firld with a goal, two ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls.
The defensive unit saw junior
Mia Dardanelli have her best game of the season, as the captain led all players with four caused turnovers to go with two ground balls.
Jennifer Smalley also was sound, forcing mistakes as well while being opportunistic with three loose ball pick-ups. Sophomore
Orla Cottell made five stops in net for King's. The Monarchs were just edged in the shot department, 28-26, but won the turnover battle 26-24.
Ramapo got a team-high five points from Shannon Eagan on three goals and two assists, and Rinaldi led all players with four scores. Molly Warner also had 10 draw controls in addition to two goals and two assists, and goalkeeper Alexandra Kerwin was solid with 13 saves Saturday.
King's will be right back on the field Sunday afternoon, traveling to Marywood University in Scranton, PA for the final non-conference game of the season at 2 p.m. on Pacers Field.
