WILLIAMSPORT, PA (August 30, 2019) --- The King's College women's soccer team scored two goals within a couple minutes of each other in the first 20 minutes to begin the season with a 2-1 victory at Penn College on Friday night at UPMC Field in Williamsport.
Freshman
Angelina Falcone got the Monarchs going with an early 18th minute strike to put KC up 1-0. Just before the 20-minute mark
Emily Harrington tallied her fifth career goal and fourth game-winning goal off an assist by
Breanna Jacinto. The assist was the third of Jacinto's career.
The Monarchs put pressure of the Wildcat keeper from the very beginning as
Sophia Sacknievich, Jacinto, and
Lauren Geiger put shots on target within the opening minutes. Penn College responded with a pair of shots that
Tara Bender was able to knock away and keep out of net.
Late in the 16th minute Harrington had her shot blocked and over the goal line for a corner kick. Jacinto took the kick and the Wildcats were able to knock the ball away out to
Kara Keim who sent a rocket in towards goal that was only kept out by a Wildcat defender for a team save.
Not even 20 seconds later Falcone put the ball in the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. The Monarchs kept the pressure on and a little over two and a half minutes later scored again to make it 2-0, which they held into the halftime break.
In the second half the Monarchs came out strong again taking five shots in the first 10 minutes with the PC keeper needing to make saves on strikes by
Abby Castle and Sacknievich. In the 59th minute, Harrington nearly tallied her second score of the game, but her shot was kept out by a Wildcat defender.
Penn was able to manage to cut the deficit in half at the 80th minute when Miya Roman found the back of the net off a kick from 30 yards out on the left side. The Monarchs defense locked down the Wildcats for the rest of the game to keep them from any more chances.
King's had a big 19-9 shot advantage including 12-5 in shots on goal. The Monarchs took six corner kicks to allowing just four for PC.
Tara Bender made three saves in 45 minutes of work net to pick up the win.
Erica Blackburn made one save while making her collegiate debut in the second half Taylor Gonzales made eight saves and the Wildcat defense made two saves for 10 total in the loss.
King's will look to keep the great start going on Wednesday when they travel to Mahwah, NJ to take on Ramapo College in another non-conference clash at 4:30 p.m. from the Ramapo Soccer Field.
