ALLENTOWN, PA (September 10, 2019) -- The King's College field hockey team traveled out on the road for the first time in 2019, but would allow four first-half tallies as the Monarchs fell to hosting Muhlenberg College 4-0 Tuesday evening at Scotty Wood Stadium.
The Monarchs (0-3) would hold off their hosts through the first 10 minutes, and had a solid chance in the fourth minute but couldn't take advantage of their first penalty corner of the game.
The Mules (4-0) though would cash in on a penalty corner in the 11th minute, as Maleah Hess powered in a shot from the top of the circle off the corner with help from Morgan Tietz for her second tally of the season.
That's how the game would go to the second quarter, as junior goalkeeper
Brianne Maluda made a stop in the 13th minute to keep it a 1-0 game. Just before the end of the first quarter, Hess nearly added her second of the game but the shot attempt clanged off the pipe and out.
The second quarter would be the decisive stanza for the Mules, scoring on all three of their shots in the period. Muhlenberg doubled its edge at 22:30 of the contest, as Hess scored from Marlee Siegel off a penalty corner. Just 1:07 later, Rachel Richards tallied her second goal of the season on a pass from the left side from Alexandra Gann.
Muhlenberg added another at 28:16 of the game, as Tietz pushed in a loose ball in front of the cage to finish the scoring. King's would dominate the third quarter, earning four penalty corners in the stanza but would only get one shot off in the period.
The fourth quarter was mostly played in the midfield, as no shots were taken and King's earned the only penalty of the period. King's was outshot 10-1 on the night, while Muhlenberg held a slight 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore
Emily Sims fired King's lone shot on the contest, while Maluda posted three stops for the Monarchs. Hess scored her two goals on three shots, while Kristin Oberg and Richards each had two shots on cage. Jordan Segrave and Nicole Ducey combined for a shutout in the win.
King's will have a short turnaround, taking on local foe University of Scranton Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium in more non-conference action.
