Two First-Half Goals Leads Scranton Past King's Field Hockey

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 12, 2019) -- The King's College field hockey teams played even with their local rivals to the north for most of the contest, but visiting University of Scranton scored two first-half tallies to push past the King's College field hockey team 2-0 in non-conference action from McCarthy Stadium.

King's (0-4) shot out of the gates quick, controlling play while firing the first four shots in the game mixed between two penalty corners. The contest would start to sway back and forth as the midfielders controlled the majority of the action. Late in the first quarter, Scranton (3-2) got on the board thanks to reserve Sheila Newby, as she took a pass from Allie Benadon and lifted it into the netting of the cage for the score.

The second period was much of the same as neither team could get anything on cage, with only one combined shot over the first 12 minutes of the stanza. After Scranton denied King's on a penalty corner, the Royals came down and scored on a nice passing sequence. Benadon retrieved a ball just outside the circle, and fed Brianna Witt on the end line. Witt's pass across would fine Gracie McClatchy, who found the back of the cage for her second goal of the year.

From that point, neither team mustered much offense in the third quarter, as Scranton took the third quarter's only shot. In the fourth period, King's would deny the Royals of a good scoring chance, as Brianne Maluda made three consecutive saves to keep the game at 2-0. The Monarchs controlled the ball late in the game in the offensive zone, but couldn't get onto the board.

Juniors Lauren Rowski and Danielle Runo each took two shots for the Monarchs, one each going on goal, while McClatchy led all players with four shots. Maluda finished with three saves for the Monarchs, and got nice defensive play from Annie Ryan, Rowski and Jennifer Smalley in front of her. Claire McAllister made five stops in earning a shutout for the Royals.

The Monarchs will have a day off before heading to Aston, PA to battle Neumann University Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in non-conference play.
