ASTON, PA (September 14, 2019) -- Sophomore
Hannah Robbins scored two goals Saturday at Neumann University, helping to lead the Monarch field hockey team to their first win of the season in a 5-0 victory over the host Knights in non-conference play from Neumann Turf Field.
The Monarchs would get on the board first in the opening period 10 minutes, as
Sara Whitesell scored her first career goal off of a rebound of a
Danielle Runo shot to make the score 1-0. That goal was the first for King's since its season opener. KC wouldn't waste any time doubling its lead as well, as Robbins fired in her first of the game off a penalty corner insert from
Lauren Rowski for the 2-0 edge.
King's nearly added to their lead early in the second period, but a
Jolee Treslar shot was stopped at the goal line by defender Lizzie Frame. Neumann would push back with a short flurry in the 19th minute, but junior goalkeeper
Brianne Maluda made back-to-back stops on shots from Sam Picker and Bri Lagroteria to keep the Knights off the board.
Two minutes later, King's would push the attack into their zone and shots from
Bailey DeLellis and Robbins but Lizzie Yu would deny the Monarchs with the score staying put at 2-0 going into halftime. In the third quarter, King's (1-4) blew the game open with three tallies in the first 10 minutes of the stanza.
Just 46 seconds into the second half, Aston, PA native
Bailey DeLellis scored her first of the season unassisted to make the game 3-0. The goal was also the first of the junior's career at King's. Seven minutes later, the Monarchs got a penalty corner and took full advantage, as freshman
Jessie Smalley tipped in a shot from sophomore
Emily Sims to make it 4-0. It was the first career points for both Smalley and Sims.
The scoring would come to a close in the 41st minute for the Monarchs, as Robbins tapped in a rebound for a
Vivian Williams shot off a penalty corner for her team-leading third goal of the season. The Monarchs would cruise to the win from that point, holding the host Knights to just two second-half shots in the win.
King's outshot Neumann 23-4 on the contest, while picking up eight of the game's 14 penalty corners. Maluda finished with four saves in the win, recording her first shutout of the season and the fifth individual clean sheet of her career. Treslar led all players with six shots, putting four on goal, while Robbins fired five attempts. Yu finished with 12 saves for the Knights in the loss.
The Monarchs finish their stretch of five games in nine days Monday evening, September 16, traveling to Keystone College at 7 p.m. for a non-conference battle with the Giants.
