Box Score WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 14, 2019) -- Despite losing the first set, the King's College women's volleyball team rallied to win three straight sets, 3-1, to defeat the local Pacers of Marywood University and improve to 9-1 on the season. Three Monarchs recorded double-digit kills, and four tallied double-digit digs in a balanced effort for the win.
The first set was the lone win for the Pacers, in the match, fighting off an early 5-1 run and a late comeback effort by the Monarchs. After starting set two down 5-0, the Monarchs swung the momentum in their direction for the remainder of the game. King's scored seven straight points in thanks to three kills by sophomore
Becca Goldberg, a kill by sophomore
Grace Frati, and three service aces by sophomore
Taylor Mueller. Despite a late comeback attempt in set two, the Monarchs earned their first win of the match, 25-18.
King's also controlled set three as they posted a 14-6 run after going down 13-11 to take the lead, 2-1, heading into set four. When it looked as though the Monarchs would cruise to a fourth-set victory, taking an early 13-7 lead, the Pacers rallied to pull within one, 15-14, before the Monarchs scored three straight points on a Pacer error, a kill by Frati, and a service ace by Mueller. The final set then saw six ties and two lead changes, forcing extra points before the Monarchs posted the set final, 27-25, and earning their ninth win of the season.
Goldberg was stellar yet again, leading the Monarchs with a match-high 15 kills, hitting .275 and adding two blocks. Pawka added 10 kills hitting .286, and Frati totaled her fourth double-double of the season, posting 12 kills and 14 digs. Mueller led the defense with a game-high tying 32 digs and added seven service aces, and sophomores
Karissa Hartzell and
Toni Galasso recorded the other two double-digit dig efforts with 14 and 13 digs, respectively. The match's assist leader was sophomore
Wiatt Hoffmann as she dished out 41 of the Monarchs' 44 total assists, and sophomores
Danielle Kitchner and
Cleo Schultz added two blocks in the win.
The Monarchs led the match in digs (88-76), kills (46-45), and assists (44-42). They also held the edge in hitting percentage, hitting .108 for the match compared to the Pacers .080.
The Monarchs have a few days of recovery after a tough weekend before opening Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play, traveling to Madison, New Jersey to take on the Devils of FDU-Florham on Wednesday, September 18 at 7:00 pm. They return home on Friday, September 20 to face Centenary University at 4:00 pm in McGrane Gymnasium.
