Hoffmann and Frati Lead Women's Volleyball to First Conference Victory

MADISON, NJ (September 17, 2019) -- Sophomores Wiatt Hoffmann and Grace Frati helped lead the offense as the King's College women's volleyball team to their first conference win, 3-0, at the host Devils of FDU-Florham, and improve to 10-1 for the season.

In the opening set, the Monarchs trailed early, 13-8 before inching closer and eventually tying the game on a kill by sophomore Danielle Kitchner. They then took the lead on a Devil's error as they ended the set on a 9-1 run thanks to three Devils errors, service aces by Hoffmann and sophomore Karissa Hartzell, kills by Frati and sophomore Becca Goldberg, and an assisted block by Hoffmann and sophomore Cleo Schultz.

Set two was controlled by the Monarchs as they used the momentum from set one to cruise to a 25-11 victory. Then, in set three the Monarchs jumped to an early 10-4 lead before allowing the Devils to pull within one, 11-10. Freshman Marta Pawka then fueled a 6-1 run with two kills along with a Kitchner service ace to make the score 17-11. After the Devils called a timeout, they made another brief run scoring four straight points before the Monarchs shut the door on the comeback effort, posting the set final 25-18, and taking their first conference win of the season, 3-0.

Hoffmann recorded a game-high 38 assists and added eight digs, while Frati totaled a match-high 16 kills on 34 attempts, hitting .382. Goldberg also performed well again as the other lone Monarch to add double-digit kills with 12, and sophomore Taylor Mueller led the defense with a game-high 17 digs. Of the Monarchs six team, blocks, Schultz had two, and there were four Monarchs with one each.

As a team, the Monarchs held the edge in kills (46-29), assists (42-29), and service aces (5-1). King's also posted the higher hitting percentage for the night at .258 compared to FDU's .088.

The Monarchs are back in action as they host the Cyclone of Centenary University Friday at 4:00 pm in McGrane Gymnasium before they open their home conference play against newcomer Stevens Institute of Technology on Tuesday starting at 7:00 pm.
