WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 20, 2019) -- The King's College women's volleyball team topple the visiting Cyclones of Centenary University, 3-0, and improve to 11-1 for the season. The Monarchs held a balanced attack as they defended their home court Friday evening.
The Monarchs controlled the match the entire way, jumping to an early 15-3 lead in set one that the Cyclones could not overcome, posting the set one final, 25-9. The momentum continued for King's as they fought off an early three-point run by the Cyclones, eventually ending the set, 25-9. Centenary scored four-straight points after trailing 18-6 to inch within eight, 18-10, before King's answered to finish the match on a 7-3 run to take set three, 25-13.
Sophomore
Meg O'Brien led the Monarchs offense, connecting for seven kills on 15 attempts and hitting .400. Freshman
Kayla Sondberg and sophomore
Wiatt Hoffmann added six digs of their own, while sophomores
Olivia Bunch and
Christie Brown added five each. Hoffmann also dished out 25 assists in the win. Brown added a career-high five service aces, and sophomore
Karissa Hartzell also added a career-high tying five assists.
As a team, the Monarchs commanded the stats, outscoring the Cyclones in kills (36-7), assists (32-7), service aces (18-3), and digs (29-24). King's also held the edge in hitting percentage, hitting .356 for the match compared to the Cyclones' -.102.
The Monarchs are back in action this coming Tuesday in their Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) home opener, hosting newcomers Stevens Institute of Technology, starting at 7:00 pm in McGrane Gymnasium. Then, they travel to Keystone College on Thursday, September 26 starting at 6:00 pm before returning home to end the week on Friday, September 27 at 5:00 pm to face the College of Saint Elizabeth.
