WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 24, 2019) -- The King's College field hockey team trailed 1-0 at halftime but tallied three times in the decisive third quarter en route to a 4-1 non-conference victory over Keuka College (NY) in play from McCarthy Stadium Tuesday evening.
The Monarchs dominated play for much of the contest, but couldn't find a goal in the first half, despite many chances. In the first quarter, King's got a penalty corner in the 10th minute and two shots by freshman
Sara Whitesell were denied with the second being saved on a defensive stop which also hit the post.Â
Minutes later, junior
Jolee Treslar nearly scored as well, but her attempt was stopped by Kassidy Valentine. The visiting Wolfpack would use that as momentum, moving the ball down the field and opening the scoring, as a Nicole Wilson rebound was tucked in by Taylor Lessard for her first of the season.Â
In the second quarter, King's had to withstand playing a person down after a green card, but
Brianne Maluda made a big save with five minutes to play in the opening half to keep the score 1-0 going into the intermission. King's outshot Keuka 12-4 over the first two quarters, while posting eight of the first 10 penalty quarters.Â
After halftime though the Monarchs would come out with renewed energy and work rate, outshooting the Wolfpack 11-0 in the period. The Monarchs would get on the board 3:34 into the second half, as
Bailey DeLellis tied the game on a sweeping shot into the right corner off a feed from sophomore
Emily Sims.Â
Just over three minutes later, King's took a lead it would hold onto for the rest of the night, as
Jolee Treslar backhanded in a shot off a
Hannah Robbins shot and save to make the score 2-1. Once again, a little over three minutes ended up in a goal for the Monarchs as Whitesell tapped in a loose ball off a saved shot to make it 3-1. It was her second goal of the year.Â
After Keuka put together an early push in the fourth quarter, King's would regain the upper hand and eventually finished the scoring with just under two minutes to play on Whitesell's second goal of the night to make it 4-1 and give the Monarchs its fourth straight win.Â
The Monarchs outshot their visitors 28-5 on the night, including a 21-5 shots on goal edge, while also holding a 14-3 advantage in the penalty corner department. Maluda made four saves in the victory, while Valentine added 16 stops for the Wolfpack. Whitesell led King's in shots with nine attempts, while Treslar fired eight shots.Â
King's will now focus on Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play Saturday, taking on Stevens Institute of Technology at 5 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium in the conference opener.Â
