WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 28, 2019) -- Visiting Stevens Institute of Technology scored 2:25 into the first overtime period Saturday on an Emma Brunet goal, lifting the Ducks to a 4-3 win over the King's College field hockey team in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) opener for both teams.
In a game that featured back-and-forth momentum changes and strong offensive surges for both teams, it was Stevens (7-3, 1-0 MAC Freedom) that gained the momentum in the overtime session. After taking possession in the midfield, Stevens brought the ball up the left flank and worked it into the middle. A shot from Brynn Froehlich was deflected up and into the cage to give the Ducks the win.
It was still a valient effort for a young King's team that had to dig itself out of an early 2-0 deficit, as the Ducks scored two goals in the first 6:33 as Skylar Migliaccio and Jaymie Fiebel each scored for the visitors.
After the second goal for Stevens, the Monarchs would start to find their footing, and King's broke through at 13:24 of the game as freshman
Jessie Smalley fired in a shot after a pass in front from
Jolee Treslar to make it 2-1. In the second quarter, King's play stayed intense and it paid off with a nice hustle goal. Smalley's shot attempt went to Treslar in front, and her attempt had enough juice to crawl over the line to tie the game at two goals apiece.
Less than 30 seconds later, Stevens regained its edge on a penalty stroke goal, as Migliaccio fired her shot from the dot to the top left past
Brianne Maluda to make it 3-2. Just before halftime, King's once again tied the match as junior
Lauren Rowski scored on reverse sweep shot off a Treslar rebound to send the game to halftime deadlocked at three.
Things would slow down in the second half, with King's best scoring opportunity coming in the 40th minute as a low drive from five yards away from Treslar was stopped by Emily Franco.
In the fourth quarter, Stevens had a point blank tip chance in the 59th minute as Natalie Logan had her attempt thwarted by a great toe save by
Brianne Maluda. In overtime, King's only chance came 90 seconds in, but Franco made a stop on a long effort from the top of the circle. That would lead to the eventual game-winner by Stevens less than a minute later.
Treslar led all Monarch players with five shots and four shots on goal, while posted a goal and an assist. Rowski was strong in the midfield, playing all 62 minutes for King's, and Smalley tallied a goal and assist in 23 minutes of action. Maluda finished with six saves for the Monarchs on 10 shots faced.
Stevens outshot the Monarchs on the day 18-11, and also posted 14 penalty corners to the five for the Monarchs. The loss for King's snapped their four-game winning streak.
King's will look to rebound on Monday, traveling to Marywood University at 4 p.m. for a non-conference battle with the Pacers in Scranton.
